Having worked on hundreds and hundreds of divorces, we agree- the so-called "trial separation" almost always ends up being a permanent separation.
The Three Wisemen of Divorce present a Conversation with Stu Webb, the Grandfather of Collaborative Divorce. Listen as the Wisemen chat with perhaps the WISEST Wiseman of Divorce, the great Stu Webb!
In case you missed our excellent discussion about the importance of boundaries during and after divorce.
Jaye Jo Portanova Cooperman is our special guest on this week's episode of the Three Wisemen of Divorce. Listen to Jaye-Jo tell her compelling story of raising a deaf child and how those lessons can be applied to finding a new way to listen during and after your divorce.
Custody and co-parenting during the summer can be challenging enough. Add COVID-19 to the mix and it gets really hard. What happens if the co-parents disagree about coronavirus safety precautions? Do parents agree on whether camps or sports are safe? Is a co-parent, a child, or a new significant other in a high-risk group and how will that impact visitation? Sit down with Mark Hill, CFP, CDFA, Scott Weiner, JD, Ph.D., and Shawn Weber, Attorney, and Mediator as they discuss the complexities of custody and visitation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
People get divorced for a reason. It's not because things are all butterflies, rainbows and fairy dust. There's anger, hurt, pain, fear, and betrayal just to name a few of the difficult emotions associated with a separation. The temptation is to stay angry, hold a grudge and even to seek vengeance. But we've learned that taking the high road can make the experience better. While it's not so easy to just snap your fingers and make the pain go away, you can make it through your divorce journey without making it worse.
A good friend, Mark Hill of Pacific Divorce Management just recounted the best story ever. A couple could not figure out their custody issues and the Judge was... at the end of his fuse when he asked, "Madam, do you love your children?" She of course stated yes. "Sir, do you love your children?" He replied yes your honor. "Well I do not love them and so go outside and figure this out!" This really struck me as it speaks to the Court not being the best outlet for figuring out familial issues and also alludes to a dirty dirty dirty little secret of family law: YOU WILL VERY LIKELY SETTLE YOUR CASE OUTSIDE OF COURT! Just as this Judge demanded, most cases are settled on the proverbial courtroom steps. #Mediation is a conflict resolution tool and process that exists to reduce stress, eliminate most of the cost of #divorce, and allow both parties to walk out of the #marriage together, proud of the compassion and #love they showed each other in the most uprooting time in their lives. The couple never actually goes to court and you work with a trained professional to attack the problems of divorce, not each other. San Diego Divorce Mediation & Family Law exclusively works in the mediation context because #peacekeeping and being a #peacekeeper is hard and you really must bathe in the practice, especially in the #divorcemediation context, in order to truly help families.
Word gets out that there is a divorce in the works. Well-intentioned friends and family come out of the woodwork to offer advice. What could go wrong? The road to hell is well-paved with good intentions. So be careful where you get your advice and how much you involve your friends. Mark Hill, CFP, CDFA, Scott Weiner, Ph.D., J.D., and Shawn Weber, CLS-F discuss how to handle the firehose of unsolicited advice.
