The Children’s Collective, Inc.’s FamilySource Center is working hard to continue providing services to the South Los Angeles community during the public health... crisis. FSC understands the importance of being available when the community needs assistance the most. That is why they continue to adapt the programming to resume in-person enrollment for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) at the FSC site on Manchester and Vermont. HEAP is offered through a partnership with the Pacific Asian Consortium in Employment (PACE) and provides income-eligible residents of Los Angeles County with a credit on their past due utility bills. Along with the utility credit, applicants also receive valuable information about energy conservation and practical tips on how to save energy and keep utility costs at a manageable level. In-person services are provided by observing the Department of Public Health guidelines protect the community and the staff from exposure to COVID-19. Program adaptations include service by appointment only to manage the flow of applicants, six-foot tables with plexiglass dividers to ensure social distancing, and disinfecting of service stations between applicants to ensure proper sanitation. Additionally, FSC program staff were provided with Personal Protective Equipment, including surgical masks and gloves to help, and visitors were provided with hand sanitize offered surgical masks as necessary. Overall, twenty families were able to apply for a credit on their utility bills.
