Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) November 11, 2019 ABOUT THE PAROLE PROGRAM On August 2, 2019, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced their plan to end the Filipino World War II Veterans Parole program based on an executive order pushed forward by Donald Trump.... KmB / Pro-People Youth stands in solidarity with the national alliance of Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) and demands the Trump administration maintain the Filipino World War II Veterans Parole Program, which was originally set to last until 2021. ABOUT THE CAUSE During World War II, over 260,000 Filipinos were drafted or volunteered to join the US Armed Forces to fight against Japanese Imperialism. Accordingly, they were promised the same health and pension benefits as their fellow American soldiers. But in 1946, the Rescission Act was signed exclusively denying Filipinos the benefits rightfully owed to them, their wives, and children. Since this racist law was passed, our Filipino-American veterans and their families have been unrecognized and had their military benefits exclusively annulled for 73 years. Justice delayed is justice denied. The number of veterans and widows dwindles and the generational gap widens every year. Over the years, veterans, their families, and other advocates have been fighting to reverse the Rescission Act. The successes we have had are small and few, often completely excluding widows and children. Time is not on our side as these elderly veterans are sadly passing away.

Introducing our last historical figure for #FilipinxFridays, Pedro Flores! Pedro Flores (April 26, 1896December 1963) took what had been a Filipino weapon, and later a Filipino toy, and started manufacturing yo-yos in the United States. In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a weapon for over 400 years. The weaponized version featured large, sharp edges, and studs and attached to thick, 20-foot ropes for flinging at enemies or prey. He soon became a self-made millionaire as the popularity of the toy skyrocketed. Indeed, the word yo-yo is a Tagalog word, the native language of the Philippines, and means "come back."

Welcome back to #filipinxfridays ! Today, we are celebrating Carlos Bulosan (1913-1956), most well known as the author of the semi-autobiographical novel, America Is In the Heart. He was highly involved in labor and socialist movements, and would contribute his own unique, post-colonial perspective as an Asian immigrant. Though during his era his works was not widely appreciated, decades after his death, due to a resurgence in Asian/Pacific Islander American Activism, his writings would be republished and gain popularity.
