Congratulations to Jullianne De La Cruz, who recently received the Bonita C. McFarland Scholarship from the Museum of Ventura County. This scholarship was presented to new or continuing college students who are pursuing art in Ventura County. Jullianne, who attends Oxnard, Moorpark and Ventura Colleges, is a talented and passionate art student who constantly challenges herself to go above and beyond in all her coursework and approaches projects with creativity. Maximizing op...portunities and making the absolute most of her projects are mantras that she carries with her through her classes. A few of her recent pieces include: Masterpiece Project: The Game, an educational pixel-styled computer game featuring Dr. Mack, Professor Morla, and other familiar OC faces; a storyboard animation, a short pixel animation, a 3D modeled story-driven environment, and an entire arcade game (OC President’s Choice Award). She also created Yobby the Betta Fish, an extra-large pop-up book that has been shown in local galleries and won many awards, including The President’s Choice Award and First Place in Sculpture at the OC McNish Gallery of Art. ALUMNI STORIES: Marcos Hurtado Marcos Rodriguez Hurtado visited Oxnard College (OC) for the first time when he was in third grade. Only five minutes away from his home, OC was the first college campus he had ever set foot on and he was impressed. His most vivid memory from the tour was of the Letters and Science Building and seeing a stadium classroom. Even at 9 years old, choosing to one day attend Oxnard College was a no-brainer, said the OC alum who is now a Student Serv...ices Specialist at the college where he oversees the Welcome Center. Entering Oxnard College, I did not know what career path I wanted. I just knew education was transformative, he said. When he enrolled at OC, Marcos’s career path was far from certain. However, he soon found inspiration. Marcos dedicated part of his time to working at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, helping students achieve their goals and forming a foundation upon which he could build his career. Influenced by the fulfilling nature of working with students, Marcos decided to expedite his efforts to obtain his associate degree. On Wednesday, October 7, Oxnard College Associated Student Government celebrated California Clean Air Day by planting two California Native White Alder trees on campus. The project was in collaboration with the Port of Hueneme and the County of Ventura. Joining us for the event were Oxnard Harbor Commissioner Jess Ramirez, Port of Hueneme CEO/Director Kirstin Decas, Miguel Rodriguez, Drew Rodriguez, OC ASG Advisor Gabriela Rodriguez and OC ASG President Lorena Ortiz. This is... Oxnard College’s second year pledging their commitment to support efforts for better air quality in our community. There is a tradition that each tree being planted for Clean Air Day is named. This year’s trees are Endurance and Patience. With all that our world is facing from climate change, the pandemic and social movement, the names were perfect, said Lorena Ortiz, ASG president. You can do your part to clear the air through actions big and small. For more information, visit https://www.cleanairday.org #cleanairday #ocasg #endurance #patience
