Jerry Story Update December 8 1:00PM Out of respect for the family, I have intentionally kept my posts a little vague. However, Kristy knows how much the square... dance world loves Jerry, so she would like everyone to know exactly where everything stands. As many of you know, Jerry, for several years, has had trouble with poor circulation in his legs. Several weeks ago he started experiencing severe pains in his leg. He went to the local ER, and was diagnosed with severe blockage. He was transferred to the ICU unit at University of Iowa Hospital for treatment. He eventually had several stints inserted into his leg. After several more days, he was released to go home. On thanksgiving weekend, Jerry started experiencing severe chest pains. Again, he went to the local ER and again was transferred to the ICU unit at University of Iowa Hospital. After an EKG, it was determined that he had suffered a minor heart attack. More tests ensued, and it was determined that were major blockages in the blood vessels around his heart. The prognosis was that he needed a heart by-pass. He had a triple by-pass on Thursday, December 8th. The surgery was successful. However, on Friday, Jerry started experiencing severe pains in his leg again. He was given an MRI to determine the degree of blockages. Either during, or immediately after the MRI, Jerry suffered another minor heart attack. At this point, Jerry became critically ill. He became non-responsive on Sunday morning. His blood pressure dropped to dangerous levels and he was placed on a ventilator. The blockages in his leg were creating a strain on his heart, and the surgeons determined that the only recourse was to amputate his leg. Even after this procedure, he remained unresponsive and was given little chance of survival. But.. Jerry is a fighter!!! He survived the procedure!! On Monday, blood pressure increased to more normal levels, and the doctors were able to start decreasing the amounts of medication that he had been receiving. As of this morning, his blood pressure remains steady and the doctors informed the family that he is taking 400% less medications than the day before. He is starting to breathe on his own, and assuming that he continues to improve, he will have plastic surgery on his amputated leg on Wednesday to better allow him to be fitted with a prosthetic later on. He is not out of the woods yet, and he remains in a guarded condition, but he is showing small improvements every day. I do not have the words to tell you all how much your support, love, and prayers have meant to the Story family. I am sure that when this is all over, and Jerry is back at home, you will hear directly from them. In the interim, please respect privacy of the Story Family at this time and do not try to contact them directly. I will continue to update everyone regularly. Tony Oxendine

Salute to Our First Responders

Please see the important message below from Marvin Fishman, Chairman of the 2021 California State Square Dance Convention, and LPaul Schmidt, President of the California Council of Square Dancers. With regret we are letting you know that the 2021 California State Square Dance Convention has been cancelled. With the pandemic surging and expected to surge even higher the County of San Bernardino is at the purple level regarding restrictions on social events. Purple is the mos...t restrictive with Red, Orange and Yellow levels following. Even at the lowest level of Yellow, we would only be allowed to have 50% of capacity and be required to wear masks and social distance with 6 feet between the dancers. That could work for round dancing and line dancing however it does not work for Square dancing. Insurance for the weekend is another issue. I have tried several different companies whom have all said they would not give us a Certificate of Insurance. We would have been obligated to pay almost $17,000 for the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds if we did not cancel at least 120 days before the event. I want to thank all of the callers, cuers and vendors who have been so understanding. I have spoken to each of them personally. At this point there will be no rollovers to Yuba City. Everyone will have two options regarding their registrations. 1. Donate your registration to the convention to help cover the expenses we have already incurred such as the ribbons, fliers and postage. 2. Receive a full refund of the amount you paid. Please keep April 2022 on your calendar, when the convention will be in Yuba City. For those of you who attended in 2018, you already know that the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds is one of the best facilities we have used for the California State Convention. Visit their website at www.castate2022.org Thank you, Marvin Fishman General Chairman, 2021 Ca State Convention Please share this information with your affiliate clubs and related dancer networks. It will be also posted on the 2021 State Convention Facebook page and convention website, and Marvin and his committee will be contacting all registered dancers. Since Convention Chairmen and Convention Facility contracts are approved by the Council Board of Directors (sitting Affiliate Presidents / Representatives), we will vote at the January Council meeting to confirm cancellation of the event and the associated facility contract. However, the decision had to be made by mid-December in order to meet the 120 day cancellation timeline. LPaul Schmidt President, California Council of Square Dancers
