They collaborated on Freedom of Speech, a project between the Oakland EastSide All-Star Ensemble (OEASE) and Oakland-based Hip Hop artist, JAHI. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla - who visited Oakland High School in November of 2019 to talk with students about voting - is making history. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he has chosen Padilla to take over the current term of U.S. Senator Kamala Harris as she heads to The White House as the next Vice President. Padilla will become the first Latino Senator from California as Harris becomes the first woman and first woman of color to become Vice President. For OUSD, December is about staying connected. Staying connected in partnership is the key to success during distance learning. Participating schools will be entered into a drawing. The winning school will be awarded with the OUSD Attendance Trophy by an Oakland Roots Sports Club athlete!

On Thursday, our Nutrition Services team held a special giveaway at the grab and go food distribution events across the District. It was a random giveaway of school supplies, umbrellas and holiday trees. The six-foot tall lighted trees were donated to OUSD by Lowe's Home Improvement to make sure some of our families could have a tree even if they don't have the resources. Our staff gave away a total of 56 trees randomly to very surprised families and students. Many thanks to Lowe's!
