Popeye the Sailor Man really existed. His real name was Frank "Rocky" Fiegel. He was born in 1868 in Poland. He was a retired sailor contracted by Wiebusch's tavern in the city of Chester, Illinois, to clean and maintain order. He had a reputation to be always involved in fighting, so he had a deformed eye ("Pop-eye"). He always smoked his pipe, so he spoke only with one side of his mouth. He loved to be around children. There is no accounting of his imaginary adventures whic...h boasts about the exploits of his physical strength, ensuring he never lost a fight. The author of Popeye, Elzie Crisler Segar, born in Chester, met Frank when where the young man was to listen to their stories and years later honored him with the character Popeye the Sailor Man. Olive Oil also existed, she was Dora Paskel, owner of a grocery store in Chester. She is also described to dress just like Olive Oil. Segar kept in touch with Frank and had always helped him with money. Frank and Popeye also carried some inherent features like courage, chivalry and virility. See more

When I was a child growing up eating out at a restaurant was a huge deal. A good lunch was a sandwich to take outside in the yard . Eating ice cream or a popsicle was a treat on a hot day. You took your school clothes off as soon as you got home and put on your play clothes. We had to do our homework before being allowed outside to play. We went to school everyday. Our one phone was attached to the wall in the livingroom and had a cord. There was no private conversation or c...ell phones! TVs didn’t have a remote. To change the channel we had to get up and change to one of just a few stations and go outside to turn the antenna. Some were still black & white. We played Mother May I, Hopscotch, Cowboys and Indians, 1,2,3 Not It, Red Light Green Light, Red Rover, Hide & Seek, Truth or Dare, Tag, Baseball, Kick Ball, Dodge Ball, made mud pies, rode bikes, fished, or played with our pets and our cousins. Staying in the house was a punishment and the only thing we knew about being "bored"--- "You better find something to do before I find it for you!" We ate what momma made for dinner or we ate nothing at all. There was no bottled water; we drank from the tap or the water hose (warm). We watched cartoons on Saturday mornings, and Walt Disney on Sunday nights. We rode our bikes for hours anywhere we chose to go. We weren't AFRAID OF ANYTHING. If someone had a fight, that's what it was, and we were friends again a week later, if not SOONER. We played til dark, sunset was our curfew, or when you heard momma calling or when the street lights went on. School was mandatory and teachers were people who you could TRUST and respect, and you’d better. We watched our MOUTHS around our elders because ALL of our Aunts, Uncles, Grandpas and Grandmas AND our Parents’ best friends and Neighbors were also our PARENTS (they COULD & WOULD WHOOP Y'ALL!,) and you didn't want them telling your PARENTS if you misbehaved, or you’d get another ‘whooping’ when you got home. These were the good ole days. Kids today will never know how it feels to be a real kid. I loved my childhood...!!! Kids these days will never understand how we grew up!!! Good Times . The best childhood ever!!!Was your childhood? some of best memories and special times. See more
