Dear 5C community, On The Loose, the outdoor club of the Claremont Colleges, stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests the movement inspires. OTL condemns racism in all forms, including the racist actions of law enforcement. We mourn the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless other Black Americans murdered at the hands of those who have perpetuated the systemic racism that exists in our country and the world. ...Although the murder of Black people is the issue of greatest importance, as an outdoor club, we acknowledge that systematic racism also bleeds into outdoor spaces. Significant racial, cultural, and socioeconomic barriers have historically prevented and continue to prevent certain groups, particularly people of color, from accessing the outdoors. Additionally, American outdoor recreation takes place on colonized land. These disparities are reflected in our club’s trips, membership, and governance. According to OTL’s constitution, The Organization shall work with its members to dismantle outdoor privilege along lines of race, gender, ability, and socioeconomic background. On The Loose is prioritizing outdoor inclusivity and anti-racist practices. We, the OTL Staff, are committed to continuously educating ourselves on the issue of inequality and the Black Lives Matter movement. We will use our platform to share resources with our members about those topics. We ask our members to continue taking immediate action to support Black lives in America, whether it be through protests, donations, or self-education. We welcome all feedback and conversation about ways we can grow at our email, [email protected]. Stay strong, stay healthy, and stay safe. In solidarity, OTL Staff For now, check out these links: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ https://bellocollective.com/16-podcasts-that-confront-racis https://www.amnestyusa.org/pdfs/SafeyDuringProtest_F.pdf tinyurl.com/blm2020protests
