The Four Treasures, or , have been an essential part of the Chinese scholar's studio for centuries. They are comprised of the calligraphy brush (and requisite brush holder), the ink stick, ink stone (or ink well), and writing paper. These seemingly mundane, everyday items are profiled in this book, which explores their many varieties and forms for collectors. A very popular book with art museums and a unique insight into the Chinese scholar aesthetic.

From our friends at UCLA: Dear Friends and Colleagues, You are invited to join us for a zoom presentation entitled Comparative studies of Chinese and Western Books and Printing by Dr. Devin Fitzgerald, Curator of Rare Books and History of Printing, Library Special Collections, UCLA Library. The presentation will be delivered in Chinese on Saturday (10/24/2020) at 19:30-21:00 (PST) / Sunday (10/25/2020) at 10:30-12:00 (Beijing time).... Through considering the different parts of books, such as their paper , character design , printing technologies and language , this talk will show how books can be used to explore some of the similarities and differences in the histories of Chinese and Western civilizations. Histories of the book are full of praise for inventors, beautiful objects, and brilliant thinkers, but these highlights need to be considered against the long evolution of practices that allowed for the emergence of the printed book. By comparing a late Ming dynasty book against a Western book from the same time, this talk will demonstrate how seemingly similar objects tell very different stories. The Los Angeles Forum on Chinese Art & Culture (LAFCAC) is resulted from collaboration among the UCLA East Asia Library, Peking University Alumni Association of Southern California and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) Alumni Association of Southern California.
