Art and activism came together (digitally) last month when Verda joined Michael Ellsworth and Corey Gutch of Civilization in an online design charette for high school students sponsored by AIGA Link Seattle and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. The challenge was to design a pop-up installation to raise awareness of issues facing their communities. "We gave them a list," Verda says, "Police brutality, racism, climate change, plastic pollution, gun control. My group went off the list and chose sex education! When it came time for Project Designer, Brianna Bernstein, and Senior Designer, Meredith Quinn, to review finish palettes for Sapphire Ventures, they brought the office outside. Living only a few blocks apart, the two collaborated safely in the open air, setting up sidewalk viewings and organizing socially distanced vendor drop offs. The finish palette reflects a buzzing San Francisco satellite office that is both the place for buttoned-up board meetings and social interacti...ons alike. Strong concrete mixes with natural wood and plants emerge out of living walls humanizing the structure of the space. Pink seesaws that straddled the US-Mexico border were recently named Design of the Year 2020 by Design Museum (London). Known as the "Teeter-Totter Wall" this installation showed that "play can be an act of resistance" and can also unite when other forces are attempting to divide. Dezeen recently named its "Top 10 Carbon-Neutral Buildings of 2020" and it is chock full of earth-friendly innovation. One such building is "The Floating Office" in Rotterdam, Holland.
