I am in a dilemma whether I should do a silver crown or a white crown for my child's back teeth? Often there is a large cavity on one of the baby molar tooth and your dentist recommends a crown (cap) to restore that tooth. Now you are trying to decide between a silver crown or a white crown for Michael's back molar tooth. Here is some information which can help you in making that decision- White crowns are esthetically pleasing and is the choice of restoration for front teet...h. However, with back teeth, read the following to guide you in making your decision: White crown (aka porcelain crown) Pros- a) Esthetically very pleasing b) gum tissues may show better response after crown placement. Cons - a) expensive b) need more tooth reduction (making the tooth smaller) as compared to a silver crown, as white crown is thicker than a silver crown c) may need to do pulpotomy (aka baby tooth root canal) because of the need of removing more tooth structure d) long term longevity (not enough data present in literature as it is a relatively newer technique) Stainless steel crown ( aka Silver crowns) Pros- a) cheaper than white crown b) do not require a lot of tooth reduction as compared to white crowns c) standard treatment of choice to restore molars since last 50 years. d) longevity well documented in literature Cons - a) unesthetic

Why does my child need a crown ( cap), can't you do a filling? There are many times when your pediatric dentist recommends a crown for your child. You are wondering why does little John/Kierra needs a cap rather than a filling. There are reasons behing this recommendation. some of them are as follows 1) If the cavity is bigger in size in baby teeth ,sometimes it can be best restored with a crown.... 2) Your child may be at a high risk of developing cavities therefore dentist chose to recommend crown as a more durable option. 3) Crowns usually go hand in hand with baby root canal ( e.g pulpotomy procedure) 4) If the tooth is formed defective like in severe enamel hypoplasia then crowns can be placed as a preventive measure. So please ask your provider about his/her thought process behind this recommendation.

Why should you see a pediatric dentist for your child’s dental visits? A pediatric dentist is a specialist in children dental care who have devoted 2 or 3 additional years in an educational setting to learn the full scope of pediatric dentistry. Many of these specialists have furthered their education by passing a rigorous board certification exam administered through ABPD ( American board of pediatric dentistry). Your child’s dental home can be best established at a specialist pediatric dentistry office. You can ask your current provider if he/she is a specialist in pediatric dentistry and is board certified. This might help you to make an informed decision about your child’s dental provider.
