Team training Text and photos Pete Nawrocky Now that dive teams have resumed in water training in many areas. Dive Team leaders are co ordinating times to cross-train in a various skills. Chesapeake Police Dept and Norfolk Police worked together in a car lifting exercise. The location was Oak Grove Lake in Chesapeake Virginia, this shallow lake is a favorite among the locals for biking ,walking and jogging. The Chesapeake team has worked out a system using the Subsalve VRS 2...000 pillow bags. Norfolk Police asked to be trained in the method since Chesapeake does this on a regular basis including a successful lift of a small bus in a Local Lake. (The story can be found in an earlier post) Gear was laid out and the entire procedure explained before divers entered the water. Teams practiced placing the bags onto each axle of the car at each of the 4-wheel wells underwater. Communication via an OTS system kept each diver fully aware of the situation around the car. Visibility was not at its best, approx. 2 feet, but the divers properly secured the bags for the lift. Inflating the bags brought the car to the surface and it was then secured to a small boat. The entire setup was then transported across the lake. A local operator then using a 60ton lift capacity crane removed the car from the lake. Training in situations like this is vital to keep dive members sharp and more importantly safe. Lifting an object weighing thousands of pounds requires planning, proper gear and experienced divers and team leaders. Working in little to no visibility in hazardous conditions is not a dive taken haphazardly. Fortunately, these teams can practice and hone their skills. Well done team. See more

Join us Thursday, June 4 @ 1:00-2:00 PST for our next stream! Russian Gold with Dick Long... In 1981, $100 million of Russian gold was recovered by divers after being lost at sea in a sunken ship. During World War II the United States supplied war material to Russia and Russia paid for that material with gold, transported by the British. The gold was on the British cruiser HMS Edinburgh when it was intercepted by a German submarine and as a result was ultimately sunk in 700 feet of water in the North Atlantic. In 1981 a consortium of North Sea oil field divers took on the job of the recovery of that gold. DUI, with its hot water suits played a key role in the successful recovery, but the process to retrieve the gold was not easy, nor without incident. Cold War politics played a role as did the irreverence for international protocols by the divers. Be sure to tune in this Thursday 6/4 to hear more on that from Dick Long!
