The Senior Inspiration Awards will be broadcast this Saturday, April 24 at 3 p.m. on NBC Palm Springs. Each valley city and the County selects residents of thei...r community to be honored. It is our pleasure to introduce Palm Desert’s honoree, retired Lt. Gen. Herbert R. Temple, Jr. Herb, 93, was born and raised in Los Angeles. In 1947, after receiving his associate’s degree from Los Angeles City College, he entered military service as a private in the California National Guard. He served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army. Herb returned to California and served in California Governor Ronald Reagan’s administration as a military aide. Gov. Reagan subsequently appointed Herb as director of the California Office of Emergency Services. While in Northern California, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Golden Gate University. Herb’s career then took him to Washington, D.C. and the Pentagon. In 1986, he was appointed Chief of the National Guard Bureau by President Reagan. Among his accomplishments was modernizing the National Guard, the oldest military institution in the United States. Throughout his 42 years of military service, Herb served our nation and its people with distinction. He retired in 1990 at the rank of Lieutenant General. Herb and his late wife Patricia moved to the desert in 1996. In retirement, Herb became active in many veterans and community activities. He has served as the Fourth District representative to the Riverside County Veterans’ Advisory Committee. He helped found the Veteran’s Easy Access Program, which brings together many veterans’ organizations in the valley to host the annual Veterans Expo in Indio. As a member and past president of the World Affairs Council, Herb focuses his time on introducing youth to foreign relations and global affairs. The organization supports youth with opportunities to hear from dynamic leaders from these fields and with college scholarships. With his vast life experience, Herb advises the younger generation to read, speak, and listen, question what you know, dream the impossible dream, and to know that history is a good road map to the future.

For over 20 years, McCallum Theatre has produced a talent project featuring local artists of all ages that result in four sold out shows at the Theatre. This year due to COVID-19, the Theatre had to close, but the Open Call team collaborated with finalists via Zoom to learn the music, which they then remotely recorded. The McCallum brought in the filmmakers of Tracker Studios to collaborate on creating a music video and The Living Desert Garden and Zoo generously stepped in as a location partner. Come view some amazing, local talent: https://www.youtube.com/watch
