A rescue effort was launched after nearly 50 pilot whales were stranded on a beach in Indonesia, but the majority did not survive. ''Forty-six small whales stranded on a beach in Indonesia have died, after rescue efforts succeeded in saving three others, local officials said Friday. Starting Thursday, at least 49 short-finned pilot whales arrived at a beach on Madura Island in northern Java, authorities said in a statement.... Large crowds gathered as a rescue operation was launched, with volunteers using tarpaulins or just their bare hands to try to push the pod back out to sea. Curious onlookers took pictures and touched the whales, while others tried to splash water on them. In the end, only three of the animals survived. "The live whales had to be released together as they live in a group," said East Java governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa in the statement. Parawansa said that officials had taken samples of the carcasses for further investigation into the cause of death. He added that the corpses, which measure from three to five metres each, would be buried on the beach at low tide. '' ''Pollution, abandoned nets, and floating plastic waste are also dangers for marine animals. ''

''The 1991-built, Panama-flagged ''Quebec'' stands accused of deliberately dumping fuel into the sea. The 28,451 dwt handysize ship, which European database Equasis says is managed by Singapore’s Feng Sea Shipping, was carrying out a logging shipment for a Chinese company when it dumped heavy fuel oil into Graciosa Bay in Temotu province in late January, the Solomons government claims. The director of the Solomon Island Maritime Authority, Thierry Nervale, told state media an initial assessment of the Quebec spill indicated about 1,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil had been discharged, and that the government would pursue legal action against the vessel’s owners.''

Taiji: LIA reports that the hunters have prepared two of the hunting boats and several skiffs this morning, but have not headed out to sea. They are in the harbor, and appear to be preparing to move some of the dolphins that were captured yesterday. RED COVE.... GREEN COVE.... Taiji: A pod of Pacific white-sided dolphins has been brutally captured for the marine park and aquarium trade. During the day-long operation, a number of dolphins were injured and visibly bleeding. It is not uncommon for some of them to die from the traumatic capture process. We are currently reviewing data and will later update this post with a number of total estimated captures. These brutal captures continue year after year because of consumer demand for captive dolphins. Please help spread the word to those who are unaware, and urge them to pledge NOT to support dolphin captivity: dolphin.fyi/DolphinPledge Feb. 21, 2021 Coverage in collaboration with #DolphinProject and #LifeInvestigationAgency (LIA)

This story is over two years old, but, the so called "catch and release" method of fishing is just as harmful to fish today, as it was two years ago. #StopCatchAndRelease #LetFishLive STUDY: Fish Struggle to Eat After Catch and Release https://t.co/XJRcf6wPEG

Although octopuses are extremely intelligent and emotional, octopus farming is in development in several countries. Octopuses will be forced to live in overcrowded, unnatural conditions that mirror the harsh confinement at other factory farms. https://t.co/0zDnsog4rB

Keep great white sharks around. Fins from up to 73 million sharks end up in the global fin trade each year. Use your voice to support a #FinBanNow: https://t.co/S1TruR0cFK https://t.co/ZC3lvJYZoG
