CRAB IS COMING! We have received a lot of inquiries about this years Dungeness crab season and we wanted to give you a little information. There are a lot of factors that go into the decisions made regarding opening Dungeness Crab on the West Coast. Most recently, abundance of whales, crab quality, and price negations have been the big 3. Weather is a huge factor, especially for commercial fishermen from Eureka who have to cross between the jetties of Humboldt Bay. This cros...sing is just as, if not more dangerous than crabbing itself. . California Department of Fish and Wildlife chose to open the season on December 23. This is a complicated date for multiple reasons, even though crab fishermen desperately want to bring the public their holiday crab. We are currently waiting for price negotiations to begin between the fleet and processors. Once a price is agreed, the fleet will determine a date to set and pull gear. Traditionally, crab pots will soak for up to 64 hours before they can be recovered. . Here are a few possible scenarios: -Season opens as anticipated -Price is decided but buyers won’t buy until after Christmas -Price is not decided and negotiations continue -Price is decided but fishermen strike for fair pay . So that’s the gist of what’s going on. Although Oceana Hooknline Seafood will be selling off our boat, we stand with the entire fleet for fair price and a fair start.
