Our main owner Chris, Fullerton born and raised, set out in 2015 not to start a business but to start a true nutrition service for our local community. The number 714-525-1244 was the Yuhas family number used from the late 1970s until the 2010s. Chris ported this family number to OC Discount Nutrition to honor his father James Yuhas who passed in 2011 and loved loc...al businesses especially health related. James and Pemmie Yuhas, married until death did them part for over 30 years, used it for calling our Dominican, Japanese, and Hungarian sides of the family as well as the many families we contacted regularly for over 10 years of competitive ice hockey, families of St Philip Benizi Church and School, and St. Catherine’s military academy alike. Gaining quality weight isn’t easy. If you attempt to gain weight and think it’s going to happen fast, then it’s the wrong mindset. It takes the persistence of properly building up a savings account, which requires time and saving little by little. Equally important, is that we need to consider the Myth of Bulking as taught by the late Charles Poliquin. In practice we should NOT get FAT while gaining muscle or strive to put on high amounts of fat to gain muscle. The more fa...t mass we have the more of an enzyme called aromatase is created. This enzyme reduces the amount of testosterone in males and females that creates more estrogen which fat storage accelerates. Without getting into the complexity of that science the short point to take home is that if we want to add quality muscle, then let’s get lean. Staying lean signals growth and the right growing hormones. The big question now is, What weight gainer would be best for me? It’s between Lean Gainers and Fast Gainers. We’ll explain. Lean Gainers (low glycemic) assist in giving our bodies protein, carbs, and fats in a powder that do NOT raise our insulin very high. This is important as insulin is the master fat storage hormone, and when it’s too high, it prevents fat to be used for energy. Remember, the more fat we store, the more aromatase is made that lowers testosterone and increases estrogen. Increased estrogen, increases fat mass. Lean Gainers keep fat mass as low as possible while adding muscle and generally have low to no sugar in them. Sounds like those are the only gainers anyone would ever need, right? Nope. Fast Gainers have their place for a select group. If you’ve tried many different nutrition coaches, diets for weight gain, and still can’t seem to get the scale to budge then do a Fast Gainer. These gainers contain good proteins and a very high amount of carbohydrates to purposely spike insulin. Insulin is the most anabolic hormone which accumulates muscle faster than any other hormone. Fitness goals are made with a balance of training, diet, and sleep. If your training program isn’t producing results, it’s time to check that you’re training for your unique neurotransmitter profile, man or woman. There are training strategies and key supplements to help with achieving a greater balance. Neurotransmitters are extremely powerful hormone like messengers we naturally create in our body. If some are too high or too low we can drastically inhibit performance, n...ot to mention results. When checking these neurotransmitters, we look to find what we’re dominant in, and what we’re lacking regarding one of the big 4: 1) Dopamine, drive & motivation - Try: Tyrosine, B-Complex, Phenylalanine, etc. 2) Acetylcholine, focus & memory - Try: Alpha GPC, DHA, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, etc. 3) Serotonin, happiness & content - Try: 5-HTP, Magnesium Glycinate or other, Melatonin, St Johns Wort, etc. 4) GABA, calmness & centered - Try: Magnesium Threonate, Inositol, Valerian, Thiamin, Niacin, etc. As an example, people who are dopamine dominant, generally need high intensity and significant variation in exercises performed. They tend to do well with appropriately heavy weight and lower repetitions with variation relatively consistent. Another example is one who has a roughly equal balance of each of the main 4 neurotransmitters. This individual must generally shoot for training high volume, less variation, and take few days off from the gym.
