When creating a cast of characters for a client based project, often the first part of the process is to draw concept sketches. The client gives the character designer a brief of what they're expecting and the character designer creates concepts based on those sketches. It's a good idea to draw explore a variety of options for the client and these are some drawings of that process. The designs were created for Lango Kids in Irvine.

Learning how to draw the figure in a sequence of poses is a part of learning how to animate a character in motion. We also focus on construction of the human body to see how it relates to constructing imaginary characters.

Here are some images from the first week of our Drawing for Animators & Illustrators class this summer where the students had to start at the basics and master the ability to draw a perfect circle, spheres, cylinders and boxes. All characters, figure drawings, props, and background elements are derived from a combination of these basic shapes. If an artist wants to draw from their imagination, they have to understand how to draw the basic building blocks off all things.
