Here are pictures of my two oldest and most used hammerstones. They are both sandstone. By looking at these you can see one attribute which you’ll notice on any such tool. The flat areas on the surface is created by the scraping glancing motion of their use. A hammerstone is thus rarely completely rounded but has sections of flat wear. These have been heavily used and well curated in the manner of the ones which a flintknapper would attempt never to lose. I’ve used these for close on twenty five years. They have become extremely small as a result. Such tools would either be buried with their owner or given to their pupil.

I figure I might finish making this Aztec sword soon. First though back to filling orders. Finally got in four elk hides from the tannery to make more lap shields. If your flintknapping kit is late, that’s the reason. Now to making some items for orders that came from the archaeology conference. Need to make a chopper and flake tool display and a pair of mahogany obsidian arrowhead earrings. I’ll be able to get a few TikTok videos from that process.
