Thank you @eastbayexpress and everyone who voted to name Oakland Pride the "Best Virtual LGBTQ Event" in the annual "Best of East Bay" 2021 edition. We look forward to celebrating with you again soon!
Rest in power Carmen Vázquez. You were a true champion for the LGBTQ+ community and for immigrant rights. Thank you for your serve here in the Bay Area and beyond. Our deep condolences to the family and friends.
Stand with our intersex siblings who have long advocated for banning harmful and medically unnecessary surgeries on babies and children who are too young to consent.
What are your hopes for the Biden/Harris administration?
We are saddened by the news of Ken Jones passing away yesterday. He was a trailblazer, fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and racial justice. Ken was such a beloved member of our community and will be greatly missed. There will be a memorial organized once it’s safe to gather. Rest in power Ken.
Congratulations Miss Major and Uncle Beck on having your new baby! Everyday you teach us the power of love, community and how to fight for liberation. You both are a great source of pride for our community and we love that you both called Oakland home for many years.
We are devastated to hear our friend Robert Olen Brown passed away. We'll remember Robbie for his sweet nature and his grace that would fill the room. He brought so much light and love to the community. Robbie hosted the sober stage at Oakland Pride, organized at the Oakland LGBTQ Community Center, and was a major advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
This would be a huge win for our community and for public health in this country. Dr. Rachel Levine would be an incredible assistant health secretary!
These are six LGBTQ+ candidates elected in 2020 you should know. They are extraordinarily accomplished and represent much of the LGBTQ+ community’s diversity and exceptionalism. The success of LGBTQ+ candidates from urban metropolises to rural farmlands shows us there are no red states or blue states. Instead there are only rainbow states in America. Our community’s increasing access to positions of power can help make our country more united, welcoming and representative of ...all peoples. There is still so much work to be done but the success of the candidates on this list and beyond gives us reason to hope for a better future. #politics #lgbtq #socialjustice #mondaymotivation #lovewins #rainbow #transgender #intersectionality #diversity #queer #lesbian #pride #bisexual #gay #bayarea #oakland #progressivepolitics #republican #democrats #election2020 #election #vote #congress #political #politicalnews See more
Once again the highest court in the land upholds our right to marriage. We must continue working to defend marriage equality and the rights of LGBTQ+ families.
This Friday, December 11th. Don't miss it. Proceeds support The Transgender District and House of Tulip.
Today is #givingtuesday. We are a queer, POC, volunteer ran non-profit and our mission is to celebrate the culture and the diversity of Oakland / the East Bay's LGBTQ+ community. We are able host our annual event, meet daily expenses, and host other year round events because of the support from people like you. Link in comments to donate. Thank you!
Directed by David Charles Rodrigues and produced by Bud Johnston and Jesse Moss for MTV Documentary Films’, Gay Chorus Deep South tells the story of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus as they embark on a tour of the American Deep South. The journey came in response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws and the divisive 2016 election. Led by Gay Chorus conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the tour brought a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals, while confronting intolerance.

The success of our movement is not simply guaranteed by whoever’s president, or by whichever party is in charge. Rather our liberation depends more on our community’s resilience, determination and solidarity amongst ourselves. Have pride in the fact that we demonstrate these attributes time and time again. It’s okay to take a moment to rest, recover, and even celebrate if that’s right for you, but remember our fight for liberation continues.
VOTE today if you haven't already. Link in comments & bio for more information.
Community, you can still vote, and register to vote in California today (Nov 3rd). Find your local polling place, and where to return your ballot. Make you voice heard.
"Roughly 965,350 transgender adults will be eligible to vote in the 2020 general election..Even after you account for this year’s record number of mail in ballots, hundreds of thousands of transgender people will head to the polls in person. There, trans voters may encounter systemic and legal hurdles, such as voter ID and felon voter laws."
October is Filipino American History Month. We celebrate our Filipinx community members’ rich cultural heritage, strength and resilience, and contributions to both the LGBTQ+ community and to our country. We want to give a special shout out to Oakland’s Charleen Caabay, cofounder of The People’s Dispensary, and winner of the Food Network’s Chopped. "Opening my restaurant in Oakland was a privilege and an honor. We were able to create more than just good food" Chef Charleen e...xplained. "We created a space to honor Filipino culture, food, and those that have paved the way before us. We created a safe space for community, family, friends, queers near and far!" We are #hellaproud to have Chef Charleen as a member of our community who's available for booking: @chefcharleen Celebrate our Filipinx community this month, and every month! #OaklandPride #CelebrateFilapinoAmericanHistoryMonth
Happy Halloween Family!
Long before June officially became Gay Pride Month, and October Coming Out Month for the LGBTQ community, Halloween was unofficially our yearly celebrated holiday, dating as far back at the 1970s when it was a massive annual street party in San Francisco’s Castro district.
This Friday at 4 pm PST is HalloQueen, a Halloween themed LGBTQIA+ charity stream for Black Trans Femmes in the Arts!
Happpy Intersex Aweness Day - want to learn more about the experiences of intersex people, and how to be a better ally? Then learn from intersex people themselves. Happy International Pronouns Day Using someone’s correct personal pronouns is a way to respect them and create an inclusive environment, just as using a person’s name can be a way to respect them. Just as it can be offensive or even harassing to make up a nickname for someone and call them that nickname against their will, it can be offensive or harassing to guess at someone’s pronouns and refer to them using those pronouns if that is not how that person wants to be known. O...r, worse, actively choosing to ignore the pronouns someone has stated that they go by could imply the oppressive notion that intersex, transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people do not or should not exist - mypronouns.org Here’s a few tips to be a better LGBTQIA+ ally when it comes to pronouns: Don’t assume what another person’s pronouns are. Instead, you can simply and politely ask what are your pronouns? Share your own pronouns when you introduce yourself. You can also do this with your digital presence by stating your pronouns in your social media bio or email signature. If you mistakenly use the wrong pronouns for another person, apologize, correct yourself and move forward. If you hear someone using the wrong pronouns from another person, correct them. Don’t refer to pronouns as a matter of preference because this implies that any pronoun is acceptable. Referring to pronouns as simply a preference can also invalidate a person’s gender identity and imply that gender identity is a choice. Gender identity is a deeply held sense of self. No matter your gender identity you are beautiful, worthy of respect and #hellavalid.
Yesterday was National LGBT Center Awareness Day. It started in 1994 as a way to build awareness of local LGBTQ+ clubs that provide a safe spaces to be in community and get connected to resources. We are very grateful for the @oaklandlgbtqcenter, The Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley, and all the LGBTQ+ centers serving our community all around the world.
