It's Official. It is with great excitement that we can finally and officially open the Oakland Pump Track! What started as a mid-ride conversation four years ago has finally come to fruition, and Oakland has a place for everyone, from first-time to experienced riders to come together, enhance their skills, and have some fun. This project could not have been completed without hundreds of hours of volunteer time, the support of City of Oakland staff, donations of dirt and equip...ment from Silverado Contractors and Herc Rentals, and over $16k in donations from the mountain bike community. Every penny of that money was spent on permits, insurance, tools, and equipment needed to make this track a reality. Thank you all so much for all the effort and patience as we learned the ins and outs of getting a public pump track built, not to mention fires, pandemic, and everything else 2020 had to throw at us. With all that behind us, we hope that everyone enjoys the track! The Rules 1. Have fun! 2. Treat others with respect 3. Max of 4 riders on the track at once 4. Do not ride on top of berms 5. NO RIDING IN THE WET! 6. Do not add to or modify the track Next Steps The track has been built! But, it's going to need some love and care to keep it fun. Dirt tracks degrade over time and we will continue to have volunteer days to keep things in shape. We may also need to conduct some future fundraisers to pay for things like getting water to the site. Stay tuned to @OaklandPumpTrack on Instagram, Facebook, and our upcoming website: https://oaklandpumptrack.org. Pass it on. Oakland Pump Track update: After years of gathering the necessary permits, raising funds, purchasing insurance, and cultivating a dedicated crew of volunteers, our core team began building the pump track this past weekend. However, due to the red-flag warning, we had to stop work on Sunday and today. We're hoping to pick things back up starting Tuesday afternoon and possibly work through the weekend. We know many of you have signed up to volunteer to help us build. We'd absol...utely appreciate that and would love your help. As of today, we have two berms plus several rollers complete. There are two more berms plus the rollers to complete to form the main track. We think we can have that done with a few more days of work. Beyond that, there's the outer track and accompanying berms, and of course, the "Toilet Bowl." Those will take a bit longer to complete, but we'll know better once the main track is done. While we have a few berms and rollers complete, THE TRACK IS NOT OPEN YET... so don't even think about riding it yet. We need volunteers for the following jobs over the next few days (and possibly this weekend): * 1-2 people to water the dirt (bonus points if you have a truck with a 2" tow hitch to help with refilling the water buffalo -- the fire hydrant is in front of Redwood Bowl's parking lot) * 2-4 people to help move and shape dirt using hand tools If you do volunteer, please know that we are following COVID guidelines (i.e., masks are required). To sign up to volunteer, do so here: https://volunteersignup.org/9QEJL. To be notified about future volunteer opportunities, add yourself to our volunteer mailing list: https://groups.google.com/g/oakland-pump-track-volunt/about. That's it for now. As the days progress, we may need more volunteers. I'll send an update as we progress. Thank you for all your support! This project has been a long time coming, but we're all so glad that there's real progress on the ground. We'd also like to thank Silverado Contractors for generously donating the dirt and equipment rentals from Herc and our fiscal sponsor, the BTCEB (Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay - BTCEB.org).

Hello fellow pump track enthusiasts! We hope you are all staying safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. As you may have guessed, the continuation and recent spikes of COVID-19 have really put a damper on our ability to hold a safe work day for the pump track. However, we have not been idle! We have since pivoted and are currently working on putting together the right mix of insurances and approvals that will allow us to bring a machine on site and shape the pump t...rack without the need for multiple work days. We will still need help in the long run with final shaping and more importantly riding, but we will be making the call based on the current situation when the time comes. Thanks everyone for hanging in there! Our team is still working on this daily behind the scenes and are still committed to making Oakland's first public pump track a reality. See more

We are stoked to have dirt on the ground! Thanks again to Sean, of Silverado Contractors for delivering four hundred cubic yards of dirt to the site. It's covered in tarps and sand bags, awaiting work days. We're staying home and staying safe, and we hope you are, too. We will schedule work days as soon as we're all allowed to congregate again. Later this spring and summer are where we think we might be able to get some work done. Everyone, I am sorry to say it but we are going to cancel the work day on the pump track for tomorrow. The rain is projected to start earlier than though and be pretty steady by Saturday morning. Thanks to a crew of awesome volunteers from the Oakland high school mountain bike team along with Morgan Fletcher and Kevin Smallman got the dirt tarped up on Thursday so it will stay nice and dry through the storms. Work days for March 21st and April 5th are still going as planned.

Here is the sign up for work days! Saturday is likely to be rainy, so it may involve minimal dirt work while we focus on getting tarps and sand bags deployed. https://volunteersignup.org/9QEJL... Thanks all!

Hello, pump track fans. When we last updated you, the project had approval, we had a dirt supplier willing to donate four hundred cubic yards of soil, which the city of Oakland had approved. We were arranging trucks, loaders, volunteers for a late August delivery when the dirt supplier changed their mind; their dirt could be used for commercial or industrial use, but not municipal. Since this is a volunteer project on city land, they rescinded the offer. So we are back to loo...king for dirt. The city of Oakland has requirements that ensure no lead, dangerous chemicals or pathogens are present in the soil. They require some history to be shown for the soil, and they have requirements for testing it in-place. We are looking for 400 cubic yards of soil, ideally soil very like the dirt of our Oakland hills, with the right clay content for constructing a pump track, but we can accept other types of soil. Knowing the original source of the material has been the Achilles heel. Commercial soil vendors can promise the material is certified as Clean Fill, but can’t provide the necessary information on its original point of origin. Finding a vendor who can meet the city’s requirements is the challenge. We are ready to begin construction. Volunteers from Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay (BTCEB) recently cleared the site of vegetation again, using the city’s supplied dumpster. Once we have the soil on site, we will begin layout and construction, ideally taking place this fall. We have set a goal with our fiscal sponsor, BTCEB of getting the dirt by April 16, 2020, but we hope to have it much sooner than that. If you can help us find this soil, which the city can test and certify, please contact Morgan Fletcher at [email protected]. We have $13,000 from donors to build this pump track. We estimate that most of that will go to dirt acquisition and delivery, and we may need to raise more funds. You can donate to our project at our gofundme page. You can follow us on instagram at @oaklandpumptrack and on our OaklandPumpTrack facebook page. We will need your financial and muscle help! Stay tuned.
