The Week That Changed Everything Not everything that is counted, counts. And everything that counts, isn’t always counted. --Leap School Student Over the past couple days, Oakland Natives Give Back and GEMs, in collaboration with our partners at The Hidden Genius Project and TEAM, Inc., visited with hundreds of students at multiple school sites and co-hosted a Tech Slam at the Academic Institute of Excellence in South Africa.... From participating in panel conversations to handing out our signature Maker’s Kits and backpacks to teaching entrepreneurship and design thinking workshops and touring construction sites for new schools being built, our GEMs really took flight this week and shined with incredible brilliance. And even though we shared so much Oakland love, what we received from the students and the greater Johannesburg community was so much more. To say that our hearts are full would be the understatement of the year, but one thing’s for sure, ONGB and GEMs will definitely be back. Well, what can we say, London was a truly remarkable adventure and we have nothing but (Oakland) love for the Capital of the World; but today, our GEMs are over the moon excited to be in beautiful, amazing, incredible South Africa - the cradle of civilization. The Motherland. This week, continuing to work with our partners at The Hidden Genius Project and TEAM Inc., we’ll knowledge share and program with hundred...s of young people, local schools and nonprofits in partnership with LEAP schools and a host of collaborators. Because clearly IDOG and Tech Slam UK just wasn’t enough stimulation for one week, on Friday, we worked with our partners and teamed up with Colorintech, a London-based organization dedicated to providing communities underrepresented in tech with equitable access to pathways within the space - as they hosted Colorcode. Colorcode is a highly interactive program designed to expose high school students of color from London to various innovative technology-related opportunities.... In addition to providing our signature Maker’s Kits to each participant, ONGB’s GEMs led not one, not two, not three, but FOUR back-to-back 45-minute training sessions on entrepreneurship. Today, Oakland Natives Give Back and our GEMs, in partnership with The Hidden Genius Project and TEAM Inc. hosted the 2nd annual Tech Slam UK. Tech Slam UK offers youth of color the opportunity to learn skills and explore career pathways related to the technology sector - both technical and non-technical. Whew!!! What. A. Day. Our GEMs braved the rain and wind to join 50 girls in a 90-minute, hands-on training session on entrepreneurship. The day was an absolute success and we are so grateful to the Chelsea Football Club Foundation for the opportunity. And you know what they say there’s no rest for the weary. We’ve got just enough time to catch our breath and get ready for Thursday's Tech Slam. ... This will be ONGB’s second year participating in the Tech Slam UK and collaborators include Uber, Aon, United Airlines, Chelsea Football Club Foundation and many others. We. Can’t. Today is the day the UK celebrates International Day of the Girl. IDOG aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. In honor of the day and this year’s theme GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable, our GEMs will partner with the Chelsea Football Club and lead 50 girls in a 90-minute, hands-on training session on entrepreneurship....
