An atmospheric river will taking aim at Oregon later today and tonight, and will drift south into far northwestern California heading into Tuesday. The heaviest amounts are expected to be restricted to mostly northern Humboldt and Del Norte counties, along with the King Range. With rivers still running rather low, main-stem river flooding is not expected, but rises on area streams and rivers should be anticipated. Some minor flooding in areas of poor drainage, such as low-lyi...ng fields, urban areas, and near small streams is possible during and shortly after any periods of particularly heavy rain, which are most likely during the day on Tuesday. Be extra cautious driving during heavy rain, and watch out for falling rocks and slides if traveling through areas of steep terrain as well. Highest totals will be in Del Norte County where a Flood Watch is currently in effect from midnight tonight through noon on Wednesday. Visit weather.gov/eka for more details on your specific location. See more
GraphiCast for Sunday, December 20th, 2020.
A westerly swell will bring breakers topping out around 25 feet to area beaches from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning. High astronomical tides will lead to some saltwater inundations of low-lying coastal areas Tuesday morning mainly along the Del Norte and Humboldt coasts, with larger breaking waves possibly exacerbating the coastal flooding. Visit weather.gov/eka for more details.
A series of westerly swells will support elevated seas from 10 to 15 feet through Saturday evening. In addition, gusty north winds to 30 kt will be possible along the south side of Cape Mendocino through the first half of the weekend. North winds will strengthen across all outer waters Sunday afternoon through Monday. A gale watch is in effect for gusts to 40 kt.

Saturday's GraphiCast Lingering showers will taper off a little later this morning and give way to some sunshine by late this morning. Cloud cover will be on the increase for portions of the area, mainly north of Cape Mendocino, this afternoon as another disturbance moves southward toward Northern California. Another round of light rain is expected later this evening and tonight for Del Norte, Humboldt, and portions of Trinity. Most of Mendocino and Lake counties are not expected to receive any measurable precipitation with this disturbance.
Repeat: There is NO tsunami expected with this earthquake
Hazardous Seas Warnings are in effect for all of the northwest California coastal waters through tonight, with near gale-force gusts for the outer waters tonight as northerly winds peak. Northerly winds may lower slightly this weekend, but will remain rather strong across all of the coastal waters, especially offshore and near/south of Cape Mendocino. A large west-northwest swell will build Friday into Friday night. The northerly winds will cause steeper seas to combine with that swell, resulting in particularly hazardous seas tonight. Rough seas will then linger through the weekend even as the swell gradually lowers.
Look out for increasingly high surf today, with 20 to 23 foot breakers peaking this evening. West to northwest-facing beaches will see the largest breaking waves. Seas will lower somewhat this weekend, but will remain rough, with brisk northerly winds along the beaches and headlands, especially Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Avoid jetties or climbing out onto rocks near the surf. Enjoy watching the waves from a safe distance!
Friday's GraphiCast
High pressure dominated the weather for the month of October on the west coast. One weather system moved through the area on the tenth bringing about the only rain of the month to most of the area. Del Norte county got the closest to normal on rainfall with nearly 30 percent of normal, while areas farther south saw only zero to 20 percent of normal. High temperatures in the inland areas ended the month well above normal. Ukiah set or tied a high temperature record on the 16th..., 17th, and 18th. Most areas closer to the coast ended up closer to normal due to a fairly persistent marine layer in place. The low temperatures ended up closer to normal due to some clear and dry nights across the interior. The coast saw some chilly nights as well during a stretch of clear days late in the month. This set a record low on the 26th in Eureka when temperatures dropped to 35 degrees. For more details on the climate visit https://w2.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=eka See more
