In 2018 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded today to Gérard Mourou, PhD and Donna Strickland, PhD, two physicists who helped to develop laser technology used in LASIK laser eye surgery. In granting the award, the The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences noted Dr. Mourou and Strickland developed laser chirped pulse amplification, a technology which allowed laser energy to be compressed into incredibly short time intervals, increasing the i...ntensity of the laser in each ultra short pulse. The Academy emphasized this laser technology’s benefit to humankind: Its uses include the millions of corrective eye surgeries that are conducted every year using... laser beams. In particular, ultra short pulse laser technology led to the development of femtosecond lasers. Femtosecond lasers are used in LASIK to create the LASIK flap and also are used in a different corneal refractive laser eye surgery technique known as SMILE. Femtosecond lasers are now also being used in cataract surgery as well. We are so excited to announce a revolutionary cataract lens: the Alcon AcrySof IQ Vivity Extended Vision Intraocular Lens! We refer to this as Vivity, and it's the latest advancement in IOL technology aimed at providing the patient the ability to gain clear vision at distance in addition to better intermediate and some near vision, compared to what a monofocal IOL would provide. A clinical study was conducted with 106 patients and they were asked about th...eir experience with the AcrySof IQ Vivity Lens: Over 90% reported they were satisfied with their vision. 94% of patients reported rarely or never needing eyeglasses or contacts at distance. 87.2% of patients were less likely to need glasses at arm’s length in bright light versus 57.6% of patients with a standard monofocal lens. 46.1% of patients were less likely to need glasses up close in Bright light versus 16.2% of patients with a standard lens. Did you know that myopia is one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide? By 2050, 50% of the world’s population is expected to be myopic (that’s 4.8 billion people!) But myopia isn’t just a nuisance that requires glasses and contact lenses, it also increases your chance o...f permanent vision loss from retinal tears and detachment, retinal degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. All myopes (especially -3 and up) should have a dilated eye exam with an eye doctor every year. And if you experience sudden onset of floaters or flashes of light, see an ophthalmologist (preferably a retinal specialist) ASAP to make sure you don’t have a retinal tear!
