omg SO EXCITED our multi-phase client project is featured on @housebeautiful !!!!!! (Link in bio!!!!!)!!! It’s been one of the great joys + honors of my career to get to work with this AMAZING San Francisco family since their littlest was a teeny baby (now a full-on kid / beast!!! ), and in phases that reflect not only their evolving vision for the possibilities of their home but also, humbly, the evolution of my (and now my team’s!!) design work!!!!! So proud of how we blended rooms from 2014-15 with renovation work we completed in 2020 thanks to the architectural expertise of @maccrackenarchitects !!! T H A N K Y O U @davidbryannash @housebeautiful @hadleykeller for sharing this story so beautifully!!!!!! Obsessed. Go read + subscribe!!!!! : @colinprice #nozdesign

Don’t let us near your bedrooms. We will fuq it up and wreck your walls to look like slabs of Nero Marquina marble, and I might off-center the rug because it makes the path to the closet better even tho it bloops the symmetry in this photo. Anyway pls enjoy our rendition of sexy serene primary bedroom. Walls: @caroline_lizarraga : @misterleedesigns : @colinprice #nozdesign... #bedroomdesign See more

Giving you Big Neutral Energy this fine Monday!!!! Obsessed with our tile design in this primary bathroom, which is in one of the lesser known things we do: collabs with a home developer in SF who believes in making our homes special + thoughtfully designed, and *accessible* for ppl on wheels . This house is B I G - and in SF that means multi-story. The suite downstairs is all ramp-access, as is the garage, where you can hitch a ride up in an elevator, and roll r...ight into this luxe AF shower (swipe to see shower). I can’t control the capitalist mechanations of housing costs in this city, but to the extent these homes will be built whether or not I’m a part of it, I’m very passionate about infusing these homes with love and creative energy that we hope future city families will appreciate and feel. I’m really proud of our developer work, and even tho we knock back some of the OMGBOLD on these projects, this space is still pretty rad right??? #nozdesign See more

Her backside !!!!! We designed the Convotatsu’s back section without a back so that you could climb in + out easily from the outdoor patio, and so you can perch here to watch the sun move over the Rockies !! Also, some ppl have been asking why, in a showcase concept house, does the bar designed by @me_and_general_design have the same wallpaper as ours S U R P R I S E! We each designed a half of the big downstairs bonus room at #wholehomecolorado !!! While we technicall...y could have drawn a line down the floor and said Anything on this side of the line is mine, no peeking!, instead we came together as two design teams on opposite sides of the US (San Francisco + Brooklyn) who had NEVER MET BEFORE, to collaborate on elements that would ensure that our distinct styles could shine, in a room that was meant to have a cohesive feel + experience!!!! I’m gonna go ahead and *claim* that this is an unprecedented level of sharing and trust between our teams, in an industry that has a reputation for being competitive! Thank you @carishaswanson @housebeautiful for having the instinct that Cristina, General, + I would be able to pull it off. And in one of the best things to come from 2020 (a low bar, I know ), we ended up becoming lifelong friends out of this experience!!!!!! T H A N K Y O U @phillipjeffriesltd for our gorgeous wall coverings, @nicholascustom for building this dream downstairs room, and @circalighting for all our fab light fixtures!!!!! Convotatsu in collab with @sungkimwoodworkanddesign + cushions by @gils_upholstery in @kravetinc !!!!!! HI THIS IS A CONVOTATSU and she’s a big Bertha 9-foot-diameter C U S T O M walnut + squish lounge concept, created in partnership with the fab inimitable @sungkimwoodworkanddesign !!!!!! When @carishaswanson at @housebeautiful first told me about #wholehomecolorado , she stressed that it’s a CONCEPT house, so we should feel free to bring new ideas. I’ve always been annoyed that you can either sit at a table or you can lounge, but then to get your drink or move your b...oard game piece you have to get up / lean forward, which is not experientially comfy thus... the use case for this furniture piece of a circular sofa with a built-in gorgeous table!!!! ALSO I love a 1970’s conversation pit and the coziness of sitting under a Japanese kotatsu (floor-sit heated table with a blanket) Convotatsu !!!! (We explored heating this table but that’ll be for the 2.0 iteration ). Sung + his team are genius + meticulous and figured out how to bring this to life, including my need for a steppy stool (for lil doggo family members) !!! Truly a bananas collaboration that taught me not to limit my ideas based on what I *assume* can be built!!! I wanted river rock pebble cushions (@gils_upholstery crushed it!!!!!) and so we also made the table base a stacked pebble form (the pebbles spin around so you fidgety leg ppl like my hubs can kick them around!) from ebonized walnut. Like seriously wow right?? And the round-but-live-edge table?!?!?! This concept was designed as a circle too to make a statement that you shouldn’t always let your furniture arrangement dictate your view - you can admire the Colorado Rockies view, the @kuzanaogg paintings, the @phillipjeffriesltd wallpaper, or the nearby fireplace/TV/bar, depending on where in the circle you flop!!!!! The Convotatsu project was one of our most ambitious undertakings of 2020, including @hedgerail + I driving it in a U-Haul across 5 states to install it! But maaaaan, pretty thrilled with how it came together Thanks as well to @circalighting for FIVE pendants, @theshadestore gorgeous drapes, + @kcontemporaryart for the privilege of showcasing Kuzana’s art!!!! #nozdesign : @emredfield

OUR 1st CONCEPT HOUSE ROOM!!!!!! So incredibly proud + honored that our wild lil downstairs hangout space gets to be a part of the @housebeautiful @wholehomeofficial feature!!!! Also, uhhh throw in a pandemic, + the project being remote in Colorado so we NEVER saw our space in person until the final furniture install... and I’d say we crushed our FIRST EVER showcase project!!!!! Our concept is all about putting your devices away and connecting with loved ones over... conversation + offline games + coziness!!!! There’s even a second convo + cuddle space that I’ll debut tomorrow THANK YOU @carishaswanson + @josaltz for this opportunity to bring a space to life in this gorgeous #wholehomecolorado house built by @nicholascustom (LINK IN BIO to subscribe for the Nov 2020 digital magazine!!!! Hitting newsstands NOWWWW) Thanks also to our amazing sponsors and beloved artists + makers who are the best part of my job: tile: @fireclaytile : @kuzanaogg on loan from @kcontemporaryart EPIC stool-side tables: @jomofurniture Big gorgeous vessels on the shelves: @yayasituation Cute weirdo lil table vessels: @yondersf Wall coverings: @phillipjeffriesltd Drapes: @theshadestore : @circalighting (Not pictured in this angle but a huge part of the other section of our space: @sungkimwoodworkanddesign @gils_upholstery ) Mega shoutouts to #nozdesign teammate @cait.rosso for being a major part of this wiiiild ride of a project!!!! : @davidpatterson #livingroomdesign

On this Indigenous People’s Day, I’d love to celebrate artworks I’m obsessed with from the Hopi + Washoe tribes!!! (Swipe for a couple pics). The Hopi have historically lived in the American Southwest (reservation is in Arizona today). Kachinas are spirits that help enable us humans to live in harmony with plants and animals of nature. Kachina dolls, wood figures inspired by the ceremonial adornments Hopi men wear when embodying these spirits, are one of my favorite things to... look at!!!! I have two placed on my highest shelf seen here the lil guy on the left is a Black Bear kachina to honor our Tahoe black bear neighbors, by artist Anthony Monongye. His work is next-level inspiring (next slide shows his bear Kachina I am still mad I missed out on!!!!!). AAAAND not on my shelves but in my G O A L S list is to one day have a woven basket by the Washoe Tribe. The Washoe tribe is super significant to me because Tahoe is located on ancestral Washoe land there’s a fab lil museum here that features a priceless collection of Washoe baskets, which are woven so immaculately that you can carry WATER in them!!!! Bad ass historical granny Dot So La Lee (2 slides over) taught a ton of fellow Washoe women how she wove baskets - but she had some 19th-century white man fanboi who basically hired her to exclusively weave for him for $$$$$ so her baskets sell today for ridiiiiic prices at auction. If you live in the US, you most likely live on an indigenous people’s ancestral lands. And if you don’t know whose, it’s really fun to look it up and learn more about each tribe’s beautiful cultures, and to remember that the land your home sits on shares a deep history with its original native people. And ALSO VITALLY IMPORTANT: remember that Indigenous Americans TODAY experience a lot of shared inequities with Black Americans neglect + malpractice in hospitals, victims of police abuse of power, when they are victims of violent crimes their cases are underpriorized, and all this while having been for hundreds of years the targets of genocide, cultural theft, and all the ugliness of Western colonialism. All this is to say, fuq Columbus, donate, learn your history, and vote!!!! See more

Such happy energy in this bright blue city kitchen!!!! Bar stools on the opposite side of the peninsula, family headquarters + junk drawer area to the right, and YAAAS there are 5 pendant lights!!!! This kitchen used to be closed off w/ traffic choke points + a funky narrow island w/ not enough storage or counter space. We suuuuper fixed all that, and added @fireclaytile H (Chain Homme) tiles for this family’s last name!!!!! : @maccrackenarchitects : @colinprice : @misterleedesigns #nozdesign

The other day, I got an email promoting a designer’s keynote on the objectivity of beauty that based on neuroscience and history, there is a science to what is lovely and what is ugly. It was from an industry publication, and I say S H A M E. Big surprise, I have a LOT of thoughts about this topic, which all culminate to, this belief is outdated, culturally regressive, white-Euro-centric, and contributes to harmful prejudices in design. 1) Unless your neuroscienc...e study is conducted on newborn infants from all over the globe at all socioeconomic levels, EVERY test subject is biased, culturally conditioned, and your study is not objective. Moreover, beyond the fact that capitalism has globalized aesthetic standards, most brain studies are conducted in the US / Western Europe, on students - because that’s who can afford the time to lie in an MRI machine IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY. 2) The notion that a middle-age white man is on a dais talking about objective beauty, in 2020, is absurd. His beliefs are the same as those that categorize West African artwork as primitive, that *praise* the architecture of my Japanese ancestry while making a tourist spectacle of the ornamental temples from my Thai ancestry. These beliefs put cultures on tiers with western styles at the top, and it prevents Design from valuing lessons + inspo from anywhere but Europe... 3) History is edited + told by those cultures who win violent wars. That’s not a good place to go justifying BEAUTY. 4) Isn’t it beyond time that we get over objectivity and let people love what they want without making them worry if it’s trendy or gaudy or classless??? The ONLY truth in beauty is that everyone is drawn to what they think is beautiful!!! A LOT of ppl think my home is way too much (like this antique + custom built-in wall I designed!)... that’s great!!! Other ppl + I love how my home stomps on boundaries and is draped in joy!!!!!!! Arrrgghhhh. We have a long way yet to go in untethering ourselves from these conditioned notions about design and beauty. And I will remain ranting about it all the while!!!!! #nozdesign : @colinprice #diningroom : @caroline_lizarraga : @misterleedesigns

Every time a mini-client’s bedroom comes to life, a part of lil childhood me, who was never allowed to hang things on the wall or have kid bedding, is set freeeeee!!!! 2 adventurous creative brothers share this room, which echoes the big tree outside onto their walls!!!! This fam has let me paint like every ceiling in the house, so these boys get spruce green, with weirdo hunter green + burnt orange (performance) velvet Roman shades + camping-cute decor. Quietly SCREAMING with joy: @archdigest has named me one of 9 *R I S I N G S T A R S*!!!!!!!!!!! Cannot even describe how much it means to me to be acknowledged by Architectural Digest!!!!!! I grew up drooling over those pages, but anytime I’ve gone to write down my goals, I’ve left AD off my list the title felt too big; I had this belief that my designs might not be enough. And yet here we are: Viv, my lil home, and I are gonna be PRINTED in the upcoming Oct...ober 2020 issue + we’re on the HOMEPAGE of AD today!!!!! AND as one of 9 new American voices defining this generation of interior design!!!!!!!! It was an immense privilege to get to speak with Mitch Owens @adaesthete + Alison Levasseur @alevasseur1 for this piece, and to be shot by @nicolemorrisonphoto in what might be my absolute favorite portrait of ALL TIME. I’m just over the moon y’all. So many more laborers + workers are a part of our projects than we’ll ever be able to tag not just our amazing construction partners on-site who are framing rooms, setting tile, doing electrical, painting, etc., but the workers who MAKE the tile, package the sink faucets, ship + deliver these materials, and more!!!!!! As designers we can design for days but nothing becomes a home and then nothing becomes a photograph without LABORERS. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. - E.J. Dionne Jr!!!! #nozdesign #progressphoto #laborday

10 years of #nationaldogday and Viv claiming every sofa + chair I bring home. Swipe for one of my earliest photos of her she is ageless !!!!! The past several days on an out-of-town install was the longest we’ve been apart in over 18 months and I didn’t like it 1 bit . Our world is so dark and so many of us are suffering or struggling or freaking out behind these internet veils of faux-aspirational reality. If it helps for a moment, I hope Viv’s cute lil face among other cute dog faces is a lil pocket of joy in your day. Keep yourself above water ok???!?! I’m sending you love virtual hugs and support!!!!!!! @ Kings Beach, California
