Mickey Haller, the ‘Lincoln lawyer’, has just completed another successful defense. As he is driving home, he is, to his surprise, pulled over by the police. The officers are aggressive and rude. Haller keeps asking why he has been stopped, and is finally informed that his car is missing its rear license plate. The patrolman forces Haller out of his car and towards the trunk of the Lincoln, from which a red-tinted liquid is dripping, When the trunk is opened, Haller discover...s the butchered dead body of a former client therein. Haller is shocked but knows this is a frame. He is arrested on the spot and the judge sets a $5 million bail. Haller goes to prison from where he works on his defense, insisting he will be his own attorney. His practice team works with him as does his half-brother Harry Bosch. The prison environment is rife with danger and Haller uses creative means in his attempt at minimum protection. Someone is determined to rid the world of Mickey Haller and if that involves destroying those that mean the most to him, it’s just collateral damage. Although the plot sounds somewhat familiar, Connelly uses his unique talent to make this a true page turner. Not only does the reader learn of criminal and court procedure, but the author inserts surprises that endear him to his large cadre of fans. Worth the read. See more
