Knee health is just as important as ankle health for running and cycling. Every time your foot dorsiflexes your tibia (shin bone) needs to medially rotate (inwards) in order to allow the ankle to dorsiflex properly. Toe mobility for swimmers is an often overlooked part of the body. When you are not able to point the toes fully, they begin to create drag. For most of us we need to reduce as much drag as possible just to squeeze out those extra few seconds per 100 meters. Start by standing with toes tucked under the foot and ankle joint pointed. Press foot down into toes to create a stretch sensation across the top of your foot and into your toes. Hold this position for 2 minutes. ... After the hold, try to extend (straighten) your toes into the ground while giving a little resistance from the weight of your foot. Do this for 5-10 reps. Next try curling your toes as tight as you can for a second and relax. Do 5-10 reps.
