We'd like to thank the North Bay Bohemian for their write up on the recent memorial for people who have passed away due to life on the streets of Sonoma County.... Organized by members of the unsheltered community and a large coalition of supporters, it was intended to formalize a space and time of recognition for the dead, and to allow for those who remember them to grieve. Among the organizers was Sonoma County Acts of Kindness (Unsheltered Community Outreach), Mask Sonoma, Homeless Action, North Bay Organizing Project, and Health Professionals for Equality and Community Empowerment-Sonoma County, as well as Squeaky Wheel. We want to transition from this extractive model that takes away people’s wages and forces them to live paycheck to paycheck to a model that’s regenerative, says Davin Cárdenas, of the Right to the City Alliance. People would have control over the communities that they live in.

One of the lead organizers of the forum is Amber Szoboszlai, organizer of the Petaluma chapter of the North Bay Organizing Project. She said while the election has diverted focus temporarily, it hasn’t changed her organization’s promise to ensure the listening sessions receive adequate attention by local leaders. We’re not waiting on this because there is an election and we think something is going to change in our favor. We’re waiting for a better moment to go to council an...d hold them accountable, and that includes making sure the public has the time and ability to participate, she said. I think the most important thing for the council to know is that we do expect this report to be discussed, and we will be back soon to make sure that happens. ¡Petaluma NBOP presente!

[español abajo] Our fierce and tireless leaders of ALMAS fought hard since May to pass into law SB1257, a bill that would have afforded them and 300,00 other do...mestic workers the same health and safety protections of workers in other industries. Governor Newsom vetoed the bill that only needed his signature to become law. Yesterday, ALMAS joined their sisters from the CA Domestic Workers Coalition in San Francisco for a protest in front of the State Building to express their anger and to collectively vow to continue fighting to end their exclusion from Cal-OSHA health and safety protections. The struggle continues!
