This guy... On Wednesdays @drewdog32 wakes up before school and gets to my house at 7:20AM for his 7:30 lift. Yesterday after school Drew’s 12u team had practice from 5:00-7pm. After finishing conditioning with his team Drew jumped into practice with the 14 and 15u teams from 7-9pm. I’m very proud of the journey @matt.hernandezz has taken to accomplish his goal of playing varsity @mdhs_baseball! As a freshmen Matt was undersized and dealt with some arm issues which unfortunately caused him not to make the Mater Dei freshmen team. We came up with a plan for Matt to continue to work with our 8th grade team during his freshmen year. The plan was less than than ideal for any high school freshmen that wants to play for his school but Matt never complained, ...he just kept working towards his goal. As a sophomore Matt went back to tryout and not only made the team but became the JV starting short stop. Over the past 4 years Matt has been one of the most consistent players at practice, he hits weekly with me, and his baseball IQ allows him to see the game a bit differently than most. Day 1... I always tell our players I’ll never make them do something I haven’t done myself. As a player I did arm care only when my arm hurt, never routinely to avoid potential pain. As a coach my arm hurts just about every day, so I know I have areas I can strengthen. Our high school team owns the 80-84MPH fastball.
