Check out this huge inonotus infection on this customers blue oak tree. Inonotus andersonii, A fungal born infection that has it's own growing season. You can see the rings it leaves behind over the years as it blastulates and spreads through the trees cambium tissue. It won't kill the tree, for a while at least, but it leaves behind a hard spot that won't flex in weather or heat events. Called canker rot, inonotus infected trees often break at the affected area. Its incurable unfortunately and the homeowner would be wise to remove this tree sooner than later.

Some of the most technical stuff we do is at these old all but abandoned forest service cabins. They are historic and the outside appearance isn't allowed to be changed. This cedar died and fell on the roof some time ago creating this Complex rigging situation. love stuff like this.

Just a little time lapse of a big trim and a removal we did last week. Business as usual. The removal (on the hill to the right) is the tree we found the Ring shake mentioned in our last post.

Came across some ring shake during the removal of a Douglas fir last week. Ring Shake is a longitudinal split in a growing tree, between the annual growth rings. Whether the shake is due to the soil quality, exposed positioning, or bacterial growth, are still undetermined. In standing trees there is no clear indications of ring shake. However, because the development of ring shake and location of the tree seem to be correlated many people refer to it as "wind shake". I've been told that 9/10 times it occurs on exposed windy slopes. Shake is easy to spot in Douglas-Fir rounds. There will either be sap oozing out of the split(s), or white, dried sap in the splits. As you can see our shake was found true to form. #treework #pollockpines #treebiology

Time and again we are asked are you going to be able to haul away the wood chip? Yes we can certainly haul it, but are you sure you dont want to keep it? Spreading a layer of wood chip on your property will have both short term and long term effects benefiting the entire underground ecosystem of the area covered. wood chips provide benefits such as weed control, organic nutrients source, home for fungi, and our favorite, especially now that its summer , H20 regulation! A ...thick layer of wood chip mulch can increase the capture of moisture from morning dew or rain storms, protect the soil from harsh sunlight, wind, and other elements and by providing a surface for water to cling to, wood chips help soil stay moist without becoming too wet. The science is pretty fascinating, and if you're looking to give the soil on your property a boost, maybe something to think about.

Invasive mistletoe anyone? We've often got more than enough to go round! Many people only think of mistletoe in its role as the holiday kissing plant, but this plant is actually a very interesting organism. As an obligate hemiparasitic plant, it grows its root system into the branches of the host tree allowing the mistletoe to leech both water and nutrients. This can lead to malnutrition in the host tree and can even kill the tree if the mistletoe is left to spread and grow. ...As always: it's never to soon to have a professional look at your trees. #justcutitout #treetrim #treecare #treework #mistletoe
