The new bridge is 205 feet above the channel, and able to accommodate larger ships50 feet higher than the Gerald Desmond Bridge. #TriviaTuesday

The Bridge Project's architectural lights will illuminate the bridge's cable-stays and towers in different colors. The lights have been installed and will be tested over three nights this week: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3lcy8Hy

Preparing the site required relocating 10 miles of utility lineswater, natural gas, sewer, storm drains & electrical wiring. Liquid nitrogen was injected into the soil to freeze the land to prevent water from seeping into trenches dug to uncover the lines. #TBT

Seismic dampers are installed on and below (pictured) the road deck to protect the towers and main span, and are just one of several seismic features to protect the new bridge elements during an earthquake to help ensure the roadway remains open. #TriviaTuesday

In the future, the Mark Bixby Memorial Bicycle Pedestrian Path will be a great addition to Long Beach’s network of bicycle routes. Although the new bridge opened to vehicle traffic on Oct. 2, the Bixby Path is still under construction. Read more: https://bit.ly/31Xz0YF

Today’s #TBT comes to us from September 2014, as the new bridge’s foundations began construction. More than 350 concrete piles, some reaching more than 17 stories underground, support the new bridge.

The new bridge has 80 cables supporting the road deck. The new bridge is a cable-stayed design, with cables directly connected from the towers to the road deck (unlike a suspension bridge, which has cables draped over towers). #TriviaTuesday
