In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, today we recognize Takeo Doi, MD, a psychoanalyst, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Tokyo, and President of the National Institute of Mental Health in Tokyo. . Author of many books and articles, Dr. Doi is best known for his 1971 book Anatomy of Dependence, which explored the psychoanalytic concept of "amae," an innate desire to be understood by, in good favor with,... and able to depend on, the people around oneself. . Winner of the 2005 Sigourney Award, which rewards outstanding work that advances psychoanalytic thought worldwide, Dr. Doi’s work serves as a psychoanalytic bridge between Japanese culture and the West, in an effort to enhance greater bidirectional understanding as well as contribute to better global understanding.
