In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, today we recognize Takeo Doi, MD, a psychoanalyst, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Tokyo, and President of the National Institute of Mental Health in Tokyo. . Author of many books and articles, Dr. Doi is best known for his 1971 book Anatomy of Dependence, which explored the psychoanalytic concept of "amae," an innate desire to be understood by, in good favor with,... and able to depend on, the people around oneself. . Winner of the 2005 Sigourney Award, which rewards outstanding work that advances psychoanalytic thought worldwide, Dr. Doi’s work serves as a psychoanalytic bridge between Japanese culture and the West, in an effort to enhance greater bidirectional understanding as well as contribute to better global understanding. NCP offers four rigorous and innovative training programs that cover a range of psychoanalytic thought and practice. . "Even after my general psychiatry residency and child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship, I still felt that my understanding of the human psyche and experience was not deep enough. Psychoanalysis offered the deeper dive I was looking for," says Tina Nguyen, MD, a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and second-year candidate in NCP's Adult Psychoanalyti...c Training Program. . At NCP, you'll learn from our distinguished faculty as you study and discuss theory, technique, research, and casework in a vibrant and collegial learning environment. . The aim of psychoanalysis is to end it so new life can begin. Jean Laplanche (1924-2012) Reference changed. I couldn't find the exact phrase in "Essays on Oth...erness". These are my references: 1. Knafo D. (2018). Beginnings and Endings: Time and Termination in Psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic Psychology. Vol. 35, No. 1, 814 2. Lemma A. (2016). Introduction to the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Wiley Blackwell. I am not sure that exact phrase belongs to Laplanche or it is a paraphrase by Lemma and Knafo.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Belated Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanzaa and Festivus for the restivus to all my friends, family, colleagues, students, fellow faculty, fellow patients and various therapists. Jeff

Psychotherapy takes place in the overlap of two areas of playing, that of the patient and that of the therapist. Psychotherapy has to do with two people playin...g together. The corollary of this is that where playing is not possible then the work done by the therapist is directed towards bringing the patient from a state of not being able to play into a state of being able to play.
