Like for many farmers with citrus trees up and down the valley, this has not been a fun week. While frosts are common, freeze events to the low 20's and teens are not. Days are filled with worry and trying to strategize for how to frost protect the trees. Sure, you can cover one tree in fabric, but what about when you have a hundred of them... too few to buy expensive orchard fans, but too many to easily protect? We have two goals... First to protect the life of the tree, second, to hopefully save the fruit from ruin. Area citrus growers are up through the night on days like this, monitoring conditions. When it's at its worst, we build and tend fires near the trees, to create warmth enough for them to survive. No. Fun.
