First births are often described as the hardest, from the fear of the unknown, to the baby's more difficult journey through an untraversed pelvis, they are longer in duration and often require more work. Vernix is a white coating on a baby’s skin carrying the role as a protective barrier. The coating moisturizes a baby’s skin, protecting the skin from wrinkling or chapping in the amniotic fluid inside the womb. It also contains antioxidants, anti-microbial/anti-infection and anti-inflammatory properties. If you notice, some babies may have more vernix while others may have very little. This is normal. The amount of vernix decreases as you get closer to your due date.
