Acorns are one of the most nutritious staple foods given to us by oak trees in the fall. I'm so grateful for oak trees. California’s oak woodlands have been dramatically reduced in extent over the past 230 years. Several oak species were extensively harvested for fuelwood and charcoal production, but most California oaks had little or no commercial value as timber. Widespread destruction of oak woodlands to clear land for more profitable uses has been an accepted practice w...hich continues to the present day in many areas. Clearing for intensive agriculture, rangeland "improvement", and urban development have eliminated oak woodlands from much of their former range. Please consider planting locally indigenous oaks in your watershed. Here is an easy, gluten-free, vegan recipe for a delicious cake without any added sugar or wheat flour. #glutenfree #vegan #acorn #oak #Indigenous #nativefoods #foraging #foragedfoods #naturalistforyou See more
The California Bay Laurel (Umbellularia californica) drops fruit in the fall. After removing the flesh and shell of the pit, the nut can be roasted. It has a bitter sweet flavor similar to cacao and coffee beans. It is quite addictive! Joel foraged these nuts from a city park in Placentia, CA. Enjoy! #bayleaf #foraging #naturalistforyou #nativefoods #Indigenous #cacao #coffeebeans #foragedfoods
