#CAClimateExpedition, Day 10: On our way from San Luis Obispo to Lompoc, we stop at Native Sons Nursery, where California native plant expert David Fross cultiv...ates and encourages the use of native and water-wise plants. . Why go native? As climate change continues and temperatures keep rising, plants will need more water to survive. Many of the plants we currently use in our landscaping notably, our turf grass lawns originate in much wetter places than California. So in terms of their water needs, they’re not well adapted to our current climate, much less the climate of the future. . But there are more benefits to native plants than just saving water: They also provide habitat for birds, butterflies, and bees. Whereas lawns are essentially ecological wastelands, native plant gardens are thriving parts of our local, special ecosystem. . Also, native plants are gorgeous! . To learn more about planting with California natives, check out the book California Native Plants for the Garden, which David Fross co-authored. For our LA-area friends, the Theodore Payne Foundation is also a great resource. . #climatechangeisreal #actonclimate #waterwise #californianativeplants #californianatives #rewilding #watersmart #savewater #climateadaptation Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants Native Sons Wholesale Nursery See more
