Madame Olive Isbell, the first teacher in California. She came on a wagon train from Illinois. Her destination was California. She met John C. Fremont (an aboli...tionist who ran for president on an anti-slavery ticket) as they traversed the rugged and dangerous landscape. This was during the time of the Mexican-American War and troops were on high alert. They were supposed to meet up with the Donner party, and we all know what happened to them in the Sierras. She first taught at Mission Santa Clara, then finally at a permanent school in Monterey called the American School. See more

Fantastic article by Smithsonian Magazine featuring guess who? Julia Morgan, of course... Architect Julia Morgan may have designed hundreds of buildings, but sh...e’s best known for California’s Hearst Castle, which mixes Spanish Colonial, Gothic, Neo-Classical and Mediterranean Revival style all in one property. Morgan began her education studying engineering in California, but moved to Paris afterwards to become the first woman ever admitted to the architecture program at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1898. She [finished the program] in three years, Schwitalla says. Her colleagues, male architects, needed four or five years. But she did it in three. To celebrate Women’s History Month we at Hearst Castle want to honor architect Julia Morgan. Her "quietly revolutionary architecture" earned her the American In...stitute of Architecture's highest honor, the Gold Medal, in 2014. There was no better architect for the job of building for Hearst. She was a pioneer in her field and while outside of California she isn’t well known, we spread her story through our regular conversations with visitors about her education, methods and her uncanny ability to overcome any obstacle in her prolific career. // Photo credit: Julia Morgan Papers // Special Collections and Archives, Robert E. Originally called the Soldier's Memorial Auditorium, the venue was built to honor the 87 servicemembers from Riverside County who died in World War I. The Riverside Municipal Auditorium has hosted numerous famous personalities, including Bing Crosby, George Lopez, and David Copperfield, among numerous others. See more

Mesa Del Rey Airport in King City, also known as Palo Alto or King City airport, was used during World War II by the U.S. Army Air Forces for pilot training. The facility included buildings, barracks, a PX, mess all, schoolrooms and aircraft hangars plus, of course, the runways.
