Developing young players is essential for the growth of roller hockey. Starting with learn-to-play programs and house leagues, we ALL need to put more time and... energy into focusing on the development of new young players. Once we get back to a more normal environment, Pacific Cup and NARCh are going to make a huge push in working with local rinks to give every young player the opportunity to participate in our events. A little background. 2002 were different times, with photography as well. Paul Chapey and Jeff Mason (NARCh founders and owners from 94-01) always had the philosophy of making the sport look as professional as possible. Ross Dettman was hired to take photographs and tell the story of NARCh through his work. For years, Ross was focused on the best players, key games, teams that were important to NARCh Sponsors, and teams that traveled a great distance to compete. The phot...os were not for sale, which is why over 80% of these photos have never been seen. We selected the best photographs for NARCh Players Magazine and shared them with our key sponsors that used them for their marketing campaigns and branding. Social Media did not exist. Print was still the focus in 2002. Many of the photos were featured in publications like the Hockey News, and a major reason NARCh and roller hockey in general was taken seriously be the best hockey players period, ice or roller. Telling the story of NARCh and attracting the best teams and players is still our focus today. We just do it differently today, mostly through social media. It was a very difficult and emotional decision when we decided not to continue NARCh Player Magazine. In the early years it was a priority to our sponsors. In more recent years with the explosion of social media it was no longer a priority to our sponsors, which is very unfortunate. If you were ever lucky or good enough to make the magazine, it made you feel amazing. You were a standout in the sport. I guess the closest thing to it now is having a highlight on our Instagram Page. While there’s certainly instant gratification with that, it’s just not the quite the same. For many years now we’ve hired photographers to take photos at our events. Their focus is different in many ways. They try to capture great moments of as many players on as many teams as they possibly can and give you the opportunity to purchase them immediately. Taking photos for 12-16 hours a day for many days in a row is mentally and physically exhausting. My point is this. Buy the photos they take of you! Whether it’s a week after the tournament, a year after the tournament, or 10 years after the tournament, there will be a point in time where you really wished you had those photos. I can’t tell you how many players look back to their NARCh playing days and tell me it was the best times of their life!
