Written by Sharad Joshi | Directed by Anitha Dixit Auditions: Wednesday May 5 | Show dates: June 19-July 3 ABOUT THE PLAY A Nawab’s ambitions collide with the fate of a donkey in this hilarious and evergreen satire, presented here with live, boisterous music. In accordance with county COVID guidelines, this play will be performed in an outdoor amphitheater. AUDITION DATE/VENUE Wednesday, MAY 5, 8pm Audition over Zoom SHOW DATES June 19 - July 3 at the Kelley Park Amphitheater in San Jose ROLES AVAILABLE 4 Females (18 60) 6 Males (20 60) AUDITION DETAILS 1. You will receive a Zoom link a day before the audition. Please log in on time. 2. Come prepared with a 90-second monologue in Hindi from a play or film you like, or something you’ve written yourself. 3. Try to demonstrate clear diction and movement. While the audition is on zoom, remember that the play will be performed on a stage in an amphitheater. 4. This is a Zoom audition, so your Zoom readiness will be a factor in our decision. Join the meeting on time and do not be fumbling with audio or video when called to perform. Ensure you are well-lit and have a good microphone. If possible, have a blank wall behind you. Avoid virtual backgrounds. Ensure the camera looks horizontally at you. If you are poorly lit, not in focus or cannot be heard, you will reduce your chances of getting a role. 5. After the first round of auditions (monologues), participants will be asked to log off. Shortlisted actors will be called back right away, to read and perform sides from the play. REHEARSAL SCHEDULE Intense rehearsals on Zoom, mostly in the evenings, until mid-May. Thereafter, regular in-person rehearsals at Naatak House in Santa Clara, in strict accordance with county COVID guidelines applicable at the time.

It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature for its illustration of the attitudes towards mental and physical health of women in the 19th century. Narrated in the first person, the story is a collection of journal entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has rented an old mansion for the summer. Forgoing other rooms in the hou...se, the couple moves into the upstairs nursery. As a form of treatment, the unnamed woman is forbidden from working or writing, and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of air, so she can recuperate from what he calls a "temporary nervous depression a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis common to women during that period. The only problem of course, was that Ponkshe, apart from being a poor student, was also a poor teacher, and so, instead of becoming a real scientist, he became a pretend one. And wh...at better way to enhance his acting chops than participating in plays with an amateur theatre company. Like Karnik, Ponkshe is unable to resist the lure of sadism, and he reveals secrets that he'd sworn to take with him to the grave, just to partake in the public spectacle that the troupe indulges in at the cost of someone's entire being.
