Pedestrian Accidents 5 Ways to Reduce Your Chances of Being Hit By a Car on Your Daily Walks 1. Definition of a Pedestrian: Anyone who is:Walking, Riding a motorized assistive mobility device because they cannot walk, or Riding something that is propelled by their own efforts, other than a bicycle... 2. Definition of a Crosswalk: A crosswalk can be either: A portion of the road painted with the distinctive white lines that people are familiar seeing, or Where 2 roads meet at approximately right angles, the extensions of the sidewalks through the intersection.Note - this means there can be a crosswalk at an intersection even if there are NO white lines on the pavement 3. Stay out of Bike Lanes! Pedestrians must stay out of bike lanes wherever there is an adjacent adequate pedestrian facility. This includes sidewalks or designated walking paths. If a sidewalk is blocked, though, pedestrians can turn to bike lanes to get around the obstruction 4. If there is no Crosswalk - you can still legally cross IF you yield the right-of-way to all vehicles that are close enough to be an immediate hazard to the you. Where there are no cars close enough, you can cross the street. This is in spite of the lack of a crosswalk. 5.Use Crosswalks (See Above*) Pedestrians must stick to the crosswalks when they cross at intersections where there are traffic lights or police. This prevents pedestrians from crossing straight to the opposite corner of the intersection, unless there is a crosswalk that allows it. We have a lot of walkers out there in the Tower District. My Employer Just Told Me Not To Come To Work Tomorrow! I Have Bills To Pay ! If your employer has reduced your hours or shut down operations due to COVID-19, you can file an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim. UI provides partial wage replacement benefit payments to workers who lose their job or have their hours reduced, through no fault of their own. Workers who are temporarily unemployed due to COVID-19 and expected to return to work with their employer within a few weeks a...re not required to actively seek work each week. However, they must remain able and available and ready to work during their unemployment for each week of benefits claimed and meet all other eligibility criteria. Eligible individuals can receive benefits that range from $40-$450 per week. The Governor’s Executive Order waives the one-week unpaid waiting period, so you can collect UI benefits for the first week you are out of work. If you are eligible, the EDD processes and issues payments within a few weeks of receiving a claim.

If the employee has paid sick leave available, the employer must provide such leave and compensate the employee under California paid sick leave laws. Paid sick leave can be used for absences due to illness, the diagnosis, care or treatment of an existing health condition or preventative care for the employee or the employee’s family member.... Preventative care may include self-quarantine as a result of potential exposure to COVID-19 if quarantine is recommended by civil authorities. In addition, there may be other situations where an employee may exercise their right to take paid sick leave, or an employer may allow paid sick leave for preventative care. Can You Get Fired If You Need to Stay Home To Watch Your Kids After Their School Closes? California law addresses this issue in Labor Code Section 230.8 which entitles employees to take up to 40 hours off work each year for their children's school activities - which would include a school closure. There is a little more to it than this excerpt, but in general:... An employer who employs 25 or more employees working at the same location shall not discharge or in any way discriminate against an employee who is a parent of one or more children of the age to attend kindergarten or grades 1 to 12, inclusive, or a licensed child care provider, for taking off up to 40 hours each year. Any employee who is discharged, threatened with discharge, demoted, suspended, or in any other manner discriminated against in terms and conditions of employment by his or her employer because the employee has taken time off to engage in child-related activities permitted in subdivision shall be entitled to reinstatement and reimbursement for lost wages and work benefits caused by the acts of the employer. It would be nice to think that employers will not be too reactionary at this uncertain time - but if they are, we are happy to help.
