Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery 03.12.2020

Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery was established in 1861 as the first formal "burying ground" in Eureka. Previously, burials had occurred in various locations or at a plot in the Bucksport area. A board of trustees was established (the Myrtle Grove Cemetery Association) and individual lots were sold. The friends or relatives of the deceased were responsible for the upkeep of the lots. Over many years, the general appearance and level of maintenance declined and beginning in ...the 1940's efforts were made to make improvements. The efforts were generally unsuccessful and in 1956-59, the City of Eureka took control of the property and has since provided oversight and upkeep. In recent years, the funding and manpower available for maintenance has been constrained. In 2015, local residents led by Kirby Bradshaw-Nunn began working on cooperative efforts with the City to make improvements, identify and raise sunken headstones, document and provide information, and raise general public interest and awareness in this valuable civic resource and open space area. A new beginning has started for Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery. Please join in and assist. See more

Thanks to volunteers Debbie, Mark, Milt, and Elmer for placing the flags today on the graves of the 240 veterans of five wars that rest at Myrtle Grove. The service of vets in peacetime and wartime will always be appreciated. And the service of volunteers is what keep the memories alive.

Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day, originally established in 1919 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of WWI. The holiday now serves to honor all veterans of military service. The 240 veterans at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery will be honored by the placement of flags at their gravesites. Volunteers will place the flags early on Wednesday morning and the cemetery will be open, as it is every day, from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm. Please feel free to visit and explore and learn about Humboldt County history. Public programs for Memorial and Veterans Days will hopefully return in 2021. Thanks for your interest and support.

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25 and the flags will be in place on the graves of 235+ veterans beginning on Saturday, May 23. Please feel free to visit the cemetery and take a contemplative walk around the grounds (at a safe social distance by all means) or do a simple driving loop. Although there will be no formal program, please enjoy our virtual program video. We hope to return in November with a Veterans Day program. Please come visit during the summer and enjoy this valuable historic asset. And remember our veterans and our local pioneers.

Memorial Day is approaching and circumstances are different than at previous times. Because the current stay at home and group gathering restrictions will not allow for ceremonies such as have been held on Memorial and Veterans Day to occur, we will not be having a formal program at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery on May 25. Volunteers have been doing their best to keep the cemetery mowed and otherwise maintained. Weather and other factors have not helped but the grounds ...should look fairly good by Memorial Day. The main flag will be flying on Memorial Day and you are free to visit on your own or on any other day. Please return to visit this Facebook page starting on Saturday, May 23 for a virtual Memorial Day program. Regular maintenance work will continue through the summer (additional volunteers are always welcome); research and documentation work will continue; and we look forward to a return to a public memorial program in November. Thanks for your continued interest and support. See more
