In honor of National Pride Month, MarinHealth is recognizing members of the LGBTQ+ community that helped shape the state of modern medicine. Today, we celebrate Canada’s Dr. Carys Massarella, the world’s first transgender president of a medical staff. Dr. Massarella served as Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Training Program and Chief of the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. A leading expert in transgender health and advocate for trans rights, Dr. Massarella is on the faculty at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Medicine. She is currently lead physician at the Quest Community Health Centre’s Transgender Care Clinic in St. Catherine’s Ontario and was named one of the world’s Top 50 Transgender Icons by the Huffington Post.
