Wordy Wednesday OFFERING CHOICES Offering our kiddos choices helps to give them control and independence. As much as it is great to give them their own independence, it's most helpful to guide our children with a limited number of choices. This helps to prevent a power struggle and keeps kiddos from getting upset. Always offer choices that you can follow through with. Movement Monday Tummy time tips Brought to you by Ms. Elena Be conscious of the surface you use for tummy time: A firm surface like a blanket or play mat on the floor is going to be much better (and safer) than tummy time on a squishy mattress or bed. Firm surfaces provide more support for babies to easily push themselves up which allows for exploring and activates their arm and trunk muscles. ... Meet babies where they are at with tummy time: Try different ways to make it a positive experience for them. It's ok to start slow and build up, as long as we trying throughout the day. The ultimate goal is to achieve at least an hour of Tummy Time total per day by 3 months of age. Get down to their level, face-to-face play is great for visual skills and play skill development. Use rattles, mirrors, shiny bead necklaces, high contrast books, and sensory pads. . . . . . #kidsinmotion #mykidsinmotion #pediatrictherapy #pediatricpt #pediatricot #pediatricspeechtherapy #pediatricptotspeech #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #physicaltherapy

This past year, our primary focus has been on keeping everyone safe by purchasing PPE and cleaning products. So, for this holiday season we asked our community for toy donations. The amount of kindness we received warmed our hearts and lifted our spirits. Your toys will be part of our toy legacy at Kids in Motion for years to come. From the bottoms of our hearts, Thank you! If you are still interested in donating toys, it's not too late! This year has been crazy for all... of us all. Each year, we are always so grateful for the many gifts our families bring into the clinic. This is of course not expected. Some of you have asked us about safe alternatives to shared food given COVID precautions, so we asked our therapists to put together a list of toys that would be beneficial to have at the clinic. This year, safety has been our highest priority now more than ever as we have been purchasing much-needed PPE and cleaning products rather than adding quite as many new toys and materials for the clinic as usual. We are sharing this list with you in the event you are thinking of bringing in a gift for the clinic this year in case working from a wish list is helpful. https://amzn.to/2KuKFZ5

Wordy Wednesday HOW TO UNDERSTAND YOUR TODDLER So, your toddler is finally using words? But you are having a hard time understanding what they toddler are saying? Here are some tips:... Give choices- Offering choices will narrow down what they may be trying to say. Ask them to show you- Ask them to point to what they want, or take you to what they are asking for. Let them know that you don't understand them- It's important to be honest with them. This will also help decrease frustration associated with them feeling misunderstood. Ask, can you use another word to help me? See if they can think of another word to help identify what they are asking for. Say it out loud yourself and take a guess- Sometimes repeating what they are asking for and taking a guess is effective. Look at their body language to see what they are looking at or gesturing towards. . . . . . #kidsinmotion #mykidsinmotion #pediatrictherapy #pediatricpt #pediatricot #pediatricspeechtherapy #pediatricptotspeech #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #physicaltherapy

Fine Motor Friday What is Sensory Integration? Sensory integration describes how our body takes in information from our sensory system (e.g. smell taste, touch, etc.), organizes it and responds appropriately. There are a few senses that are not included in our commonly used 5 senses. Two of which are often added to help describe our sensory system called your vestibular sense and proprioceptive sense. Vestibular sense (balance) tells us how to position our bodie...s and heads and detects movement. Proprioceptive sense (awareness of body in space) helps us know what we do with our joints, muscles, and ligaments. Deficits in sensory processing can cause difficulties that affect behavior and life skills. This often impacts children who are on the Autism spectrum or children who have difficulty with sensory processing (such as sensory processing disorder). Deficits in the sensory system can result in hyposensitivity or hypersensitivity to stimuli in their environments. For example, loud sounds may cause intense discomfort or a child might seek out constantly crashing or jumping on the floor because they need intense input to feel their bodies in space. What is Sensory integration therapy? Sensory integration therapy works with your child’s unique sensory system to help modulate or integrate sensory input to help increase a child’s threshold for tolerating sensory-rich environments, creating easier transitions and reducing behaviors. Sensory integration therapy is a play-based therapy that uses equipment such as trampolines, swings, and slides. Your therapist may also provide deep pressure, brushing, weighted vests or engage children in heavy work tasks. Kids in Motion is equipped with sensory motor gyms and your occupational therapist can integrate sensory integration into therapy sessions if they believe your child will benefit from sensory integration. . . . . . #kidsinmotion #mykidsinmotion #pediatrictherapy #pediatricpt #pediatricot #pediatricspeechtherapy #pediatricptotspeech #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #physicaltherapy See more

MOVEMENT MONDAY Intoeing part 1 Brought to you by Sarah C., DPT Intoeing is when internal rotational forces act upon a child’s lower extremities, causing their toes to point inwards during standing and walking. It may be the result of several factors, many of which will resolve over time. The most common causes are associated with inward rotation of the femur, tibia, and metatarsal bones. To help prevent and/or reduce imbalances in muscle strength and flexibility, you ca...n assist your child with the stretches, and sitting positions in this post. Avoid W-sitting: This position increases stress on the hips and knees. When on the floor, encourage criss-cross, side sit, or long sitting position. If your child is unable to sit on the floor like this, try using a slightly elevated surface (such as a step stool) until they are more comfortable Seated Stretching: Use the time spent putting on or removing shoes to stretch their hips. Have them bring their foot up towards their opposite knee or rest it on top if able. You can help them hold the opposite hip in place for a bigger stretch. Try to hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds! Stay tuned for strengthening exercises to promote better hip and knee alignment and decrease intoeing. . . . . . #kidsinmotion #mykidsinmotion #pediatrictherapy #pediatricpt #pediatricot #pediatricspeechtherapy #pediatricptotspeech #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #physicaltherapy

Wordy Wednesday THOUGHT PARKING LOT Do you have Chatty Cathy or Talkative Tim? Or a kiddo with great ideas that talks about his thoughts at inappropriate times?... It's important to honor your child's thoughts and ideas but it's also important to model when these thoughts are appropriate to talk about. This is when a, "though parking lot" can come in handy. A thought parking lot, is a concept in which your child can place their thoughts on hold until an appropriate time to talk about that idea. This is how we use it, "Hey buddy, that is a great idea, but can we put that idea in the thought parking lot because we are doing homework right now. We can visit the thought parking lot after homework." It acknowledges that the thought is important but right now is not the time to talk about it. The thought parking lot can also be used as a visual placed on your child's desk, simply point to the visual when your kiddo needs to use the thought parking lot. . . . . . #kidsinmotion #mykidsinmotion #pediatrictherapy #pediatricpt #pediatricot #pediatricspeechtherapy #pediatricptotspeech #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #physicaltherapy

FEEDING FRIDAY MASK CHEWING, BITING AND SUCKING Brought to you by Ms. Lauren, OTR/L, Ms. Liz, OTD, OTR/L, ATP, and Ms. Elaine, OT/L There are different reasons why a kiddo might chew, bite, or suck on their mask. One of the reasons for a kiddo to chew on their mask is that they are seeking oral sensory input. If your kiddo is seeking this type of input, integrating heavy work for their mouth throughout the day may reduce chewing on their mask. Click through our pictures to ...see a list of oral motor heavy work activities from And Next Comes L - Hyperlexia & Autism Resources Reduce chewing with these adaptive ideas 3D mask bracket for kids: A plastic insert that goes between the mask and their face. This may work best if sewed into the mask to keep the bracket in place. Shieldkerchief: A mix between a face shield and mask made by Julie Vester Plotnick Chew gum or chewy candy: Provide supervised oral input to keep kiddos from mask chewing Children's sized disposable masks: This material is more difficult for a kiddo to suck into their mouth and can also be less satisfying to chew. . . . . . #kidsinmotion #mykidsinmotion #pediatrictherapy #pediatricpt #pediatricot #pediatricspeechtherapy #pediatricptotspeech #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #physicaltherapy

If you would like to participate, please take a picture or video of your child doing their favorite PT activity and send it to [email protected]. Or your child’s treating therapist can also help you with this during your child’s PT session. We would love to hear from present and past patients! Also, ask your child what PT means to them or what it ...means to you as a parent. And no filtering what your child says! It is amazing what comes out of the mouth of babes! If you don’t want your child’s picture to be used, you can still ask what PT means to your child and we can use your/their quote.
