My Baby Swims

Today is my final day in the water this year. I have spent more than 665 hours in the pool in 2020, likely more than anybody in Southern California! All of which while wearing a wet, often soaked mask, making it harder to breath and talk to my kiddos. This year has not been easy but more than any other year I can safely say I have had the best students and parents. Thank you to all the parents that have trusted me with your children in this weird year. Thank you for maki...ng the commitment to water safety and for driving to the pool every day. Thank you for treating me with patience and respect as I have tried to figure out the new normal in the pool! Thank you! Natalie has come back for 3 years in a row and truly loves to swim! Next year (when she is 4.5) she will start to learn a freestyle swim stroke with her arms out of the water and side breathing. I see a future swim team champion in her!

We are now in the purple tier here in San Diego but the @plungesandiego will remain open! Additionally, as ISR is survival swim lessons, I am considered an essential worker and will continue to teach regardless - wearing a mask the entire time. Swim lessons are safe and there is no better time than the present to make sure that your children have the skills to swim back to the wall and float on their backs to breathe. Working with Hudson has been one of the best parts of my Summer! He worked harder than any student that I have had because he had to overcome his physical challenges. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 2 years old and he (at 3 years old) is swimming before walking! Not only have I seen him thrive in the water but the confidence that he has gained by learning the swim float swim sequence has extended to all parts of his life. He is talking to more people, smil...ing all the time and has now started to walk on his own more. So proud of you Hudson! Here is what is his mom said in her recent review, "We knew how valuable swimming could be for him to get his little body moving, but we weren't sure if he had the ability. We finally decided to give it a shot and we couldn't be more excited about the results! Not only can he swim, but he loves the water! Having a child with special needs is a challenge with all the appointments and therapy they have, but finding an activity that our son loves and excels at is the best feeling in the world!"

This year has certainly had its ups and downs. One of the biggest challenges (while not required but I chose to do) is wearing a mask during lessons. I am not willing to risk being a super spreader impacting all of my swim families and my own. So, teaching my own kids this summer and not needing a mask during those lessons was beyond a breath of fresh air! Those smiles and giggles during lessons and excitement talking about lessons at home was truly a highlight of 2020!
