Did you know Juneteenth is this Saturday? Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, after the Civil War and announced that enslaved people in Texas had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This means it took two and a half years for enslaved people in Texas to learn that they were free. Slavery in America was formally abolished later in 1865 by the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. To learn more about Juneteenth, the history of slavery in the U.S., and the Reconstruction period that followed the Civil War, check out our display at the City of Mountain View Public Library or request one of the books on our Juneteenth reading list: https://encore.mountainview.gov//sea/C__S(juneteenth2021)
