History cont.. the superintendent who built our range was Ed Kelly. Ed was born and raised in Bonsall California. In the middle 1950s, as a young man Edward for Dick R9sson at Circle R (Castle Creek). Later Ed became the first superintendent at San Luis Rey Mission Hills, Stardust and Cherry Hills golf course. Bill T. (Owner of range) also grew up in Fallbrook he knew Ed from his golfing days. Ed took over the construction of the range when Dick returned to Texas. All three were friends. Dick passed away in the early 2000s at the age of 89. Ed is retired now and still lives in Bonsall. Bill is forever grateful for Ed‘s help in the construction of the range. He can’t praise him enough. They still remain friends to this day.

HISTORY of the Golf Range/Valley: Dick Rosson (a +2 handicapper and legendary superintendent was a very good friend of Bill and Barry. Dick started his career at Circle R (Castle Creek) in the early 50s. He built Pala Mesa in 1962 and Rancho California (now Temecula Creek Inn) in 1969. He retired and moved to Texas in 1978. In 1992 he returned to Murrieta for 6 weeks to help Barry M. And Bill design the golf range.

ANSWER to trivia: Who was RICKIE’S 1st Pro?? : Mark Quiland first taught Rickie. In 1992 when Rickie was 4 yrs.old he fell in love with hitting golf balls. His grandpa, Taka, asked about getting Rickie some lessons. Mark was available and taught Rickie the grip, stance and the set up. In less than a year Mark took a job in Orange County and left the range. When the Fowler’s asked about another pro for Rickie, Barry stepped in. Barry and Rickie worked together until Barry passed away in 2011.

ANSWER to the Trivia question: The famous landmark at the range is: The PEPPER TREE (at the very end of the range) . Also known as The Hogan Tree OR just BARRYS TREE. At age 10, BarryMcDonnell watched his grandfather teach under a large tree at New Bedford CC in Massachusetts. After the lesson, young Barry would shag all the balls for his grandfathers next lesson. This is where he learned to teach: watching his grandfather give golf lessons. When Bill and Barry we’re buildin...g the range, Barry really wanted a large tree for his lessons, just like his grandfather. He planted a pepper tree and told Bill that all he needed now was the right young person to teach and he would take them all the way to the Tour. In December of 1992 in walked 4 year old RICKIE FOWLER and his grandfather Taka. Many hours were spent under the tree with Rickie. Well, you know the rest of the story.
