Murphys Volunteer Library Book Club Meet June 17th Thursday, 10:00-11:00 Murphys Community Park The Elegance of a Hedgehog, by Muriel Barberry. ... There are eleven (11) copies within Calaveras County circulation. Kris will gladly help you order your copy to read. To kick off the summer, we are reading, The Elegance of a Hedgehog, by Muriel Barberry. In this novel, Renee Michel is a concierge who believes that every concierge is perceived as unintelligent by those for whom they work. For this reason, Renee goes to great lengths to hide the fact that she often spends her days reading Marx and Tolstoy. It is not until Renee meets a new tenant, Kakuro Ozu, that she finally finds a person with whom she can truly be herself. At the same time, Paloma Josse is struggling with the same sort of identity crisis. She is a highly intelligent girl who feels she must hide her real thoughts from those who do not understand her. In befriending both Renee and Kakuro, Paloma finds a way to relate to the outer world and find pleasure in life. The Elegance of the Hedgehog is a novel of personal identity that will inspire the reader to face life head-on, rather than hiding behind masks that are designed to deceive not only the outside world but ourselves as well. ~Bookrags. Murphys Volunteer Library Book Club: Meet: Thursday, July 6th 10:00-11:00- Murphys Community Park Of Women and Salt, by Gabriella Garcia. Three copies will be available in June through the County Library System. Our second summer read will be, Of Women and Salt, by Gabriella Garcia. In present-day Miami, Jeanette is battling addiction. Daughter of Carmen, a Cuban immigrant, is determined to learn more about her family history from her reticent mother and makes the snap decision to take in the daughter of a neighbor detained by ICE. The conflict between the Cuban matriarchs is intertwined, as Jeanette travels to Cuba to see her grandmother and reckon with secrets from the past destined to erupt. From 19th-century cigar factories to present-day detention centers, from Cuba to Mexico, Gabriela Garcia's Of Women and Salt is a kaleidoscopic portrait of betrayals--personal and political, self-inflicted and those done by others--that have shaped the lives of these extraordinary women. This is more than a diaspora story; it is a story of America's most tangled, honest, human roots. ~ Goodreads.
