Today I am drinking bootleg coffee. While in Hawaii (Big Island), we visited the UCC plantation in Kona. While we were waiting for our tour, one of the men who was working in the welcome center started talking to me about home roasting. We found out that we had a lot in common, and that we ordered from the same source, Sweet Maria's in Oakland. After our tour, he very subtly handed me a brown paper bag and said, "Here. On the house." I was a little puzzled, because he had ...told me earlier that the agricultural department controls on unroasted beans were pretty strict. I asked him, "Will I have any problems at the airport?" "Strictly speaking, it's not legal. Just be careful." I carefully placed the beans below another bag of beans that I had purchased. We made it back to mainland with no issues. I managed to make a roast this past Friday. It's good.
