Parkview School loves America and books and today celebrated with a Drive-Thru Americanism Parade and book giveaway. Due to the pandemic, the Parkview Eagles had to find another way to show their patriotism and keep the school’s traditional Americanism Parade alive. For today’s 46th Annual Americanism Parade, students and families decorated their cars, driving through the front parking area of the school receiving free books and prizes, while staff members waved and cheered. Everyone was very happy to see each other and celebrate America!

La Primaria School’s Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) book distribution began today with Transitional Kindergarten through 2nd grade students visiting the school to pick up their free books. Teachers and staff were excited to see the students, many who came dressed up for Halloween. A fun decorative backdrop provided the perfect setting for a Halloween picture. Staff members also dressed up in their favorite sports gear as they teamed up against drugs for Red Ribbon Week. Tomorrow, La Primaria will welcome the upper graders to pick up their books and enjoy some Halloween fun.

Madrid Middle School held a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) event this week themed Harvesting for Books where all students were able to choose a book of their choice for their home reading collection. Additionally, in honor of Red Ribbon Week, the first 30 students to pick up a book each day received a bag of red candy. The school also gave away free pumpkins to the first 10 students to arrive each day so they may enter the school’s Pumpkin Carving Contest and a chance to win a Starbucks gift card. Madrid Middle School’s Students Run LA (SRLA) team, led by coach and teacher, David Dorf, participated in the SRLA Strength 10K this past Sunday. The first race of the SRLA 2020-2021 race series is usually a large event bringing all area SRLA teams together, but this year due the pandemic, teams held their own 10Ks locally. Madrid’s team ran their race at Whittier Narrows. The student runners did a great job and the coaches, support staff, runners and family members enjoyed the event and were proud of the efforts displayed by all. Madrid’s team will continue to train as they gear up for the next race in the SRLA series, a 15K on November 15, and other races leading up to the 26.2 mile LA Marathon scheduled for March 21. Congratulations Bulldogs on a great race!

This week MVSD schools are participating in Red Ribbon Week and students are pledging to live drug, alcohol, tobacco and vaping free lives. Joining in the national drug prevention campaign, schools are holding virtual activities and fun dress up days promoting being drug-free while honoring Kiki Camarena, a DEA agent who died while fighting substance abuse. The El Monte Police Department created a Red Ribbon Week video for schools to utilize during Distance Learning, featur...ing the Police Chief, School Resource Officers, Safety Officers, Detectives, K-9 Officers, SWAT Officers, Tactical Flight Officers and the Chief Pilot, promoting this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free. The officers shared how much they miss the students and encouraged them to work hard in school, keep focused on their goals and stay away from drugs, alcohol, tobacco and vaping. MVSD greatly appreciates the efforts and partnership of the El Monte Police Department for their continued support of our students and schools. See more

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, MVSD’s District Office staff continued its tradition of celebrating Pink Fridays during October by wearing pink and donating funds for cancer research. This year’s Pink Friday activities were a little different due to the pandemic, taking place virtually, but the support, care and commitment of the District Office team remained. Following the theme Shut the Lid on Cancer staff members decorated beautiful, creative and inspirat...ional boxes (with lids) to keep their donations in throughout the month. Today, the D.O. team enjoyed pink donuts and pastries to celebrate collecting $1,315.00 to donate to the City of Hope, and a very special survivor’s anniversary - the 5 year cancer-free anniversary of our Superintendent, Lillian Maldonado French. Team MVSD will forever support the fighters, admire the survivors, honor the taken, and never, ever give up hope! See more
