Have you ever heard of the term 'Downcycling' ? It may sound a bit off to the ears at first. A great example of downcycling, to understand it further, would be a plastics water bottle being downcycled into items such as: clothing, insulation, and carpeting. Once the plastic bottle is broken down, it’s very unlikely that it will be another plastic bottle again.

Disinfectant wipes are a great example of greenwashing. Many times, the packaging will show something of greenery or a leafy forest image and are promoted as green or eco-friendly but really, they aren’t. Besides the chemicals the wipes have on them; many are made from polyester or polypropylene which causes them not to be flushable or biodegradable. #beresourceful #doyourreseach

Chloë De Smedt is a leader helping Carondelet High School become more sustainable. As a student, she not only helped coordinate special events such as expos focused on educating her student body about important topics like the damaging effects of single-use plastics and water pollution prevention, but she was extremely helpful with the roll-out of their campus organics program. She and her fellow ‘Green Team’ members provided on-campus support, which included in-person compost training and sorting guidance during their lunches. Prior to Covid, they were diverting more than 14 yards of recyclables and organics per week. Please be sure to keep proper spacing between carts. Unfortunately, if carts are too close to other objects such as a car, your cart might be unserviceable due to the truck’s automated arm not having proper clearance to safely empty your cart. Also, if you happen to notice low hanging wires, please contact your utility company so they can get that repaired for you.
