The National Math Festival invites parents and guardians (and grandparents and aunts and uncles, etc!) of kids of all ages to join us at Math Moms & Math Dads, a new Facebook group to support each other as we gear up for a new and perhaps challenging school year. Math Moms & Math Dads is a place to share ideas with one another, give and get encouragement, trade stories, and ask questions of the recreational math experts (National Math Festival presenters) who will join us on occasion. What does math look like in the wild? How can math be a source of wonder and joy instead of frustration? Explore our posts and share your own favorite activities and observations! Join: www.facebook.com/groups/mathmomsandmathdads.

Thanks to Dr. Pamela Harris (Williams College, and site director of the 2019 MSRI-UP Research Experience for Undergraduates), Joanne Beckford (University of Pennsylvania), and a number of our MSRI-UP 2019 student participants: Alex Christensen (University of Arizona), Lucy Martinez (Stockton University), Eduardo Torres Davila (San Diego State University), and Fabrice O. Ulysse (University of Notre Dame)!
Yesterday, the White House announced the recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). We are honored to be named as one of three such institutional awards given this year. MSRI extends its gratitude to the many individuals involved in our programs and committees who have demonstrated intense lifelong devotion to mentoring and supporting the mathematical community. This Presidential Award is a deeply moving tribute to those individuals and their contributions.
For fans of Numberphile, the Simons Foundation presents this recorded webinar of "Me and YouTube: The Surprising Benefits of Making Videos About Science and Mathematics" featuring Brady Haran sharing his adventures in making science and math videos on YouTube. Referencing specific examples, he illustrates how popular and perhaps unconventional communication can sometimes yield surprising results. These examples include recent breakthroughs in the summing of cubed numbers. View the recording online: https://www.simonsfoundation.org//me-and-youtube-the-surp/
